g727 and Latino Urban Forum present: An exhibition about how to plan Los Angeles for a future without fossil fuels. What will make that future desirable? The Fifth Ecology: Los Angeles Beyond Desire Exhibition Duration: November 15 - December 12, 2009 Opening Reception: Sunday, November 15, 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. Regular Gallery Hours: Tuesday - Saturday 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Special public programs for this event will be announced through g727’s website, www.g727.org. To join g727’s email list please subscribe by emailing us your information to g727.adrian@gmail.com. Professional students from the Royal University Collage of Fine Arts’ Department of Architecture in Stockholm Sweden will be descending upon downtown Los Angeles to propose an alternate future for Los Angeles in which the concrete-encased Los Angeles River is radically reconfigured to become a catalyst for a new Los Angeles. This team of Swedish architects, planners, artists, engineers, writers, and set designers will transform g727 into a three-dimensional, full-scale day-glo pink model of a section of the LA Riverbank. This version of the LA River will cut a hot pink swath through the gallery space, its riverbanks lined with a host of artistic proposals on how to develop the LA River into a transformative public space for Los Angeles communities. In preparing for this project, the students have created a strategic plan specifically for the section of the LA River that flows through the eastside of downtown, specifically through communities such as Elysian Valley, Cypress Park, Lincoln Heights and Boyle Heights. This strategic plan, called The Fifth Ecology, emphasizes architecture and planning strategies for environmental sustainability, and proposes a chain of urban places which transform a currently dysfunctional urban zone dominated by industrial infrastructure into an energy-producing, post-material public space of spectacular urban qualities. Background: The Royal Academy of Fine Arts’ Department of Architecture focuses its post-graduate program on the intersection between art, architecture and urbanism. The exhibition is part of a three-year long academic project entitled Cities and Energy, which focuses on the question: How can we design and plan radically different points of departure in our urban environments to create a future without fossil fuels? The project studies one city a year from each of the three most oil-consumptive economies in the world. For more information please contact: Måns Tham mans.tham@gmail.com The exhibit is sponsored by Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation, The Swedish Institute and The Consulate General of Sweden in Los Angeles. • Bank Square Regeneration

          45:24

from Northern Visions NvTv / Added

Bank Square is bounded by St. Marys Chapel built in 1784, Kelly’s Cellars, the oldest pub in Belfast and meeting place of the United Irishmen 1791, the award winning Mourne Seafood Bar and Berry Street Presbyterian Church. Currently there are plans for the regeneration of this area by DSD with a budget of £5m. This has awakened aspirations, imagination and excitement for this neglected area of Belfast. Local traders claim, however, that despite initially speaking extensively to the planners, little of their thoughts and ideas have translated into these recent plans. They also feel, given appropriate parameters, that the private sector could do much to regenerate the area resulting in less public subvention in this area. There are strong alternative views as to how the site should be developed including reopening the thoroughfare from Royal Avenue to Berry Street. How far can the DSD consultation process accommodate these ideas, given contributors past experiences in the consultation planning process? Contributors include: Raymond Holbeach: RPS Consultants, Declan Hill: Forum for Alternative Belfast, Bob McCoubrey: Mourne Seafood Bar, Rita Harkin: Ulster Architectural and Heritage Society, Joby Fox: Belfast Arts & Events Chairman.
