Improved plasma speaker, the audio comes from the arc. Seems my DSLR sucks for audio...

A bit less distorted, and louder. Nothing stopped working at the end, I just happened to turn the power supply off there and end the video. Arcs start at 3 inches although it puts lots of stress on the transformers insulation so I keep the electrodes quite close together. I have had several other transformers fail and arc over from having the arc gap too big in the past (one with arcs starting at over 5 inches!).

After running my plasma speaker's main part, the flyback transformer at 36v input with a very small amount of primary coil turns the insulation of the flybacks secondary winding began to break down from the high voltage being produced (3 inch igniting arcs) causing lots of corona leakage. I then added two more primary turns which made the arcs smaller but the damage to the flyback transformer was already done and it still preceded to leak corona and eventually that evening it arced over completely from near to where the HT lead comes out and surface arc-over to one of the seams in the casing. This has taught me to use a safety gap when voltages of over 40kV are being produced in order to stop the transformer from failing. Oil insulation might be an option though. Tags
