                Jen Dionne Professor, Department of Material Science and Engineering, Stanford University Progress and Challenges in Plasmon-enhanced Photocatalysis and Photovoltaics March 6, 2013 | 4:00pm | ESB 1001 Abstract Metallic nanoparticles support strong, localized oscillations of conduction electrons – surface plasmons – that have recently enabled significant improvements in photovoltaic and photocatalytic cell efficiencies. While considerable research has investigated the potential for somewhat larger plasmonic particles (>20 nm) to enhance solar energy conversion, most catalytic reactions rely on the high catalytic activity of very small metallic particles. In this presentation, we explore the plasmonic and catalytic properties of such small metallic nanoparticles, with the aim of using plasmons to both monitor and enhance catalytic reactions. We first investigate the plasmon resonances of individual nanoparticles as their sizes are reduced from 20 nm down to less than 2 nm. We find that plasmon resonances are influenced by quantum confinement effects for particles smaller than 5 nm. Then, we study the photocatalytic activity of individual metal nanoparticles coated with titania. Shifts of the plasmon resonance probe addition or removal of electrons during a redox reaction, providing insight into charge-separation mechanisms. Finally, we explore the potential to achieve broadband solar absorption in photocatalytic and photovoltaic systems using upconversion. Calculations indicate that upconverting materials can significantly improve cell efficiencies, and we develop the experimental techniques to realize high-efficiency upconversion by tailoring the optical density of states via plasmonics and the electronic density of states via pressure measurements. Our single-particle measurements unravel the interplay of particle structure and function, and provide a platform for enhancing future photocatalytic and photovoltaic systems.

(me) ********************************** The compositional idea of “Plasm_on” comes from a reflection about mankind and nature, in particular by the analysis of the broad and multifaceted concept of the natural inclination ( so human in a broader sense ) – to adaptation, to becoming, to shaping in adaptives forms (of concepts, beliefs, society, education, thoughts, culture...) in always news and unstable istances of being, that exist within the boundaries that we ourselves - observers of ourselves - we establish (or that we are educated at, influenced by, programmed to establish…). The habit is perhaps a particular declination of this process, a dimension that finds in the concept of time the ontological basis for its existence but also the keys for its self-analysis. The habit as an active operation in its ontological perspective, but, typically, not always conscious. So in this work I wanted to investigate the relationship between habit and reality, the reflection on the becoming as a metaphor of itself,trying to enveiling the mechanism of the mechanism... The sum of experiences, educations, contacts , social and cultural reverberation between human beings (maybe a sub-group inside the macro system of nature and universe) useful to costruct and sustain a sort of “Mystery of Faith”, the golden jail where almost all thing finds their sense (in a trascendent, mystical direction or even in the worst direction of “the fear of..”). In this perspective, time is the origin and the context itself, leaving the concept of “libero arbitrio (free will)” without any sense. The work aims is to propose an invitation to reflection, leading to the unveiling of these mechanisms of being, in an artistic context and perspective. An invitation to listen, listen in an expanded and even unconscious way. An invitation to take our proper time and even (why not?) to waste it. A call to action and a suggestion to reflect on the actions that often we make unconsciously in our attempt to shape our existence, as we know it, underlining the topic that basically we are not so free and conscious to exist and live as we are thinking. **************************
