On December 14, 2013 Pat the Dog Playwright Centre held an intensive in conjunction with the Playwrights Guild of Canada on self-producing at festivals such as Toronto’s SummerWorks and Fringe Festival. Although the day had a Toronto-centric focus, the imparted knowledge from the speakers applies to all juried and non-juried festivals. There was a broad spread of speakers from early career to established playwrights and those who sit on the panels of such festivals: playwright and director Evan Tsitsias, GG-winner Erin Shields, Kelly Straughan of the Toronto Fringe and Michael Rubenfeld of SummerWorks.

ETC's Creative Age broke new ground in its 5th year, adding an exciting intergenerational creative component. Our 55+ actor-storytellers from AHC Hunter's Park met weekly with undergraduate playwriting students from George Washington University Department of Theatre and Dance. The students first shared plays they wrote before the residency (mostly on intergenerational issues), with seniors and students reading the plays aloud. These readings brought important themes to the forefront of the group's conversation and our seniors shared their own reflections and personal experiences evoked by the plays. The students listened intently, and between sessions wrote new sketches and monologues based on the conversations (and on the lives of the seniors). Project Director Elizabeth Kitsos-Kang then worked to create a seamless script combining portions of the students' earlier work with the new scripts and stories they brought out. The often-intimate, always profound conversations quickly turned these 4 college students and 5 elders into a tight-knit family, who you can see here reading their joint creation together at the GW New Play Festival. This residency was made possible by the Washington DC Area Geriatric Education Center Consortium and partners AHC, Inc, the GW Dept. of Theatre and Dance, and Educational Theatre Company.
