1. Ray: A Life Underwater

    from Danny Cooke Added 282K 4,932 286

A rogue with an eye for salvage - and the ladies - Ray: A Life Underwater is an affectionate portrait of one man's deep sea diving career, told through his extraordinary collection of marine artefacts. Like a modern-day pirate, 75-year-old Ray Ives has been scouring the seabed for treasure his whole life. The former commercial diver has plundered the deep for over fifty years, bringing to the surface anything that glittered -- even gold. In a shipping container near the water, Ray tends his museum of cannon, bottles, bells, swords, portholes and diving gear. He even still takes to the water in a 1900s diving suit. Ray can be found most days at his museum at Yacht Haven Quay, Plymouth. • Maker and Rame Institute and Clock Tower Kingsand JGP

      from GSL Media Added

Maker and Rame Institute and Clock Tower The big storms of the 3rd, 4th and 5th February 2014 saw some of the largest storm waves attack the South Coast of Devon and Cornwall. The distinctive and iconic Maker and Rame Institute and Clock Tower, built on the sea front at Kingsand, sustained substantial damage. The wall above the sea wall and lower terrace of the building was destroyed, as was the balcony above. The East facing corner of the building was breached; the Clock Tower was left in a tenuous state and seriously at risk of not only sustaining further damage, but collapse in any future storm event. The building above the breached east corner was in danger of collapse. The breach and storm wave eroded adjacent walls left the institute in a fragile and tenuous state, particularly with the threat of continuing storms. JGP were commissioned, on the 7th February 2014, to engineer making safe the building and to protect it, as far as possible, from further storm damage. Celtic Construction were instructed to carry out the works, under JGP instruction. Over the weekend of Saturday the 8th and 9th of February, Celtic Construction worked in very difficult conditions to install props to remove the risk of immediate collapse. Further works to protect the building, as far as practical, from the vagaries of further storms, are planned for this week and next.

        from GSL Media Added

Severe storms on the 14th & 15th February 2014 further damaged the Kingsand clock tower and Rame Institute building. Huge stormwaves again breached the sea facing Institute wall and severely eroded the internal west wall of the building leaving the clocktower and indeed the whole building in a most precarious state. The interior of the institute became fully exposed and was severely battered by the large storm waves. It was evident that the clock tower was extremely close to being lost. Measurements indicated that the top of the tower moved some 15mm.

We hope you like the video and we welcome any constructive comments you may have. Peace and best wishes CCDiscoveryChannel Original Video : CCDiscoveryChannel 2012 Original Music : CCDiscoveryChannel 2012 Built around 1747, replacing a navigational obelisk, the Folly was part of an 18th century craze amongst the gentry to improve the landscape with ‘romantic’ ruins. Not everyone was convinced: in 1810 the landscape painter Joseph Farington RA described it as an ‘instance of bad taste … the form of it bad; and the situation of it worse.’ Later the Illustrated London News of 1894 described it as a ‘monsterous affair’. Today the Folly is regarded by experts as a particularly fine example of a picturesque ruin. It is made froma hotchpotch of fragments salvaged from the Stonehouse (Plymouth) churches of St Laurence and St George. Taken from ‘Five Walks Around Mount Edgcombe & The Rame Peninsula’ by Bill Scolding. Location: Mount Edgcumbe Country Park, Cornwall U.K. Europe.
