April 22, 2013: In celebration of the launch of its new BFA in Writing program, PNCA is pleased to welcome three acclaimed Portland writers – Lidia Yuknavitch, Tom Spanbauer, and Chuck Palahniuk – for an evening of words and on words. This video contains a full recording of Lidia Yuknavitch's reading at PNCA as well as audience Q&A's. Write Now celebrates the launch of PNCA’s BFA in Writing program, chaired by PNCA faculty member Monica Drake. Palahnuik will lead a discussion of what it means to be a writer now, to pursue the writing life, and to try to make a living and to always make art with words. Lidia Yuknavitch and Tom Spanbaeur will read from their books. Tom Spanbauer, founder of the Dangerous Writers workshop and author of The Man Who Fell in Love With The Moon and other novels will read from his works as will Lidia Yuknavitch, editor of Chiasmus Press and author of Dora: A Head Case and The Chronology of Water: a memoir. Chuck Palahniuk, best known for his breakout novel, Fight Club, will lead a discussion “Writing is an art, a method, and a way of life,” says Monica Drake, Writing Department Chair. “To study writing is to bring shape and rigor to the very act of thinking and self expression. As we wrestle with words, we learn to tell our stories, and find enriched meaning in the world.” The event highlights the broad community of writers that enlivens Portland’s literary landscape, a community in which, right out of the gate, PNCA’s BFA in Writing program has worked to embed itself. I created a piece of animation to be included in a collaborated video for the Richmond Elementary School library. I used Dragon Frame for the stop-motion, Photoshop for the eyes and magic and After Effects for filters and background. The blackness at the end will act as a transition into another animation. Sound will be added in the final piece.

In In Traveling, Takahiro Yamamoto reflects on mental and physical experience of traveling through the lens of live performance. Here, seven dancers follow individual score simultaneously in space. At the same time, they decide the duration and timing of each task within the score through their external awareness of the environment, viewers, and actions of other performers. Focusing on the connection between experiences of dancers and viewers as well as the relationship among dancers themselves, In Traveling arises from the questions, observations, and obsessions with the power and nature of live performance. Brad Cloepfil is the founding principal and creative lead of nationally-recognized Allied Works Architecture, the firm behind the renovation of the historic federal post office on 511 NW Broadway. In this video, Cloepfil walks us through the future Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Center for Art and Design. When PNCA President Tom Manley first came to Portland, he and Cloepfil sat down for lunch. Cloepfil remembers, "I was excited about the next generation of PNCA. After that lunch, I was so inspired that I basically committed to him and the school from that moment onward." On the future Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Center for Art and Design, Cloepfil says, "When you're creating a building for creative endeavor and activity, you want the building itself to be a generator. You want it to be something that inspires new work, inspires new thinking, inspires activities. It's kind of the perfect place. Now the North Park Blocks will be given a new identity and activity. So I think its location will have a real generative force in the urban processes, and urban growth in those neighborhoods. It symbolically, physically, and every single way, establishes PNCA, or the next generation of PNCA, in the city. I think that's why we're all so excited about the Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Center for Art and Design." Credits: Producer / Director: Janique L.
