This cross-disciplinary arts symposium brings together artists, performers and scholars from the different branches of the creative arts that have recently been united under the new Center for the Arts at Temple. The inspiration for this symposium is attributed to the Tyler exhibition “Charles Searles: In Motion,” as the symposium uses Searles’ work as a springboard to further investigate intersections of visual art, music, dance and theater. This portion of the symposium focuses on performers reciting poetry.

Love relationships as a metaphor for change. I took the poems that I wrote for my ex-boyfriend from Mexico, which reflected the ups and downs of the relationship and arranged them in chronological order. I reflected upon the content of the poems and the intensity of the emotions they expressed to then arrange them in a scale from 1 to 10, creating a scatter plot of poetry and emotional change. The rate of change in the graph not only alludes to constant life change but also to the heartbeats of the human being. Moreover, the geometrical shape of the line could convey the rationality with which a human has to stand in order to look at change objectively. Once I had that the graph traced, I cut it out in a piece of wood and covered with the poetry. Later on, I became closer with this piece of wood by showering with it, leaving lipstick stains on it, sleeping with it. By performing these acts, that would be acts that are involved in a relationship, I reflected the attachment that we have to situations accompanied by unstable human relationships. I was literally holding “change” in my hands and in my sleep. However, the final act, burning it, reflected the final breakthrough that every human being has to go through at some point of his or her lives; detach. These performances were recorded and presented in an audio-visual along with the ashes of the object encased in a pottery urn, crafted by myself.
