1. Nostalgia

    from Kat Kaye / Added

Perception and memory recall are subjective, limited, and flawed. I find it interesting that so much of our sense of self and our lives is predicated on something so unstable. We replay flickering fragments of events that shaped us with such persistence so that we can make sense of them, yet it feels like we’re reaching for something we can never hold. And still we try. This was filmed on a broken point and shoot camera where I sought to capture moments that may or may not have happened that continue to shape me today with an emphasis on how they felt. The distortion of the camera mimics what happens with time and our own imaginations. This collection of vignettes is presented like a stream of consciousness. Memories feel like pieces of shattered glass, even when you put them together it will never look and feel the way that it once was, you end up creating something new.

I got asked to ride along for a spur of the moment New York trip. Over the corse of 3 days I rode in a car and shot photos from the windows. My brothers friend was selling a car and it needed to be delivered immediately and then he needed to return to Oklahoma asap. This left us with just a few hours to see New York City and look around. I'm not one to shoot a lot of video for fun but I was curious to test what the RX100 M3 could do. Most of these shots weren't planned out and I just really recorded when I didn't feel an opportunity to take a photo. Each shot was hand held. The more I sat and looked through the footage, the more I felt a shape potentially grow to make this. Camera: Sony Rx100 Mark III Framerate: 60fps Editing: Adobe Premiere just using one RGB curves layer and slowing each clip to 40% speed. Song: H.U.V.A. Network - Dissolving Time

“You only need one good shot”, whispers the tour guide to the _______________. Instead of hunters travelling to Africa in hopes of returning from their expedition with a prize trophy to mount on their wall, photographers roam the African wilderness in hopes of capturing the perfect image to frame and hang on their wall. Tourism is a driving force and photography is a tourist’s job. Are these new age hunters utilizing the point and shoot camera in place of the gun? Is this colossal boost in tourism from photographic safaris placing African animals in a new kind of danger? In Kenya’s Maasai Mara reserve, a world famous safari destination, the soaring tourist numbers have severely damaged roads and the natural grasslands, threatening wildlife populations in a new way. Ads read “Help you get the wildlife shots you only see on TV” for $250/day.
