I was in the Coast Guard Reserve and had a chance conversation with someone at Coast Guard Headquarters who was trying to find a Reservist who could write and produce a short video about the Coast Guard's involvement in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Since I had the background they were looking for, I volunteered to do the project. The Coast Guard was very happy with the end product and they agreed to fund a video-to-film transfer because I thought I could secure a theatrical exhibition to qualify for Academy Award consideration. Fortunately, I had worked with Monty Hall in the past and he graciously contacted Bruce Corwin, who was the President (now CEO) of the Metropolitan Theater Chain, and he screened it in one of their downtown LA theaters for a week qualifying it for consideration in the documentary short subject category. I found out how the Academy process worked from Arnold Shapiro, the Academy award winning documentary producer of "Scared Straight." The last time I checked with the Coast Guard, the one 35 mm print had been sent to the National Archives.
