Check out more at: http://pdxpick.com/music/bands/laura-ivancie When a singer-songwriter who lists Ani DeFranco as one of her primary influences and describes her music as "rooted in blues" tells you she's put together a trip-hop album, you know you're in for an interesting listen. That's exactly what you'll get when you listen to Laura Ivancie's newest EP, Marrow. The always-lovely Ivancie sat down with us at Star Theater to talk about her solo album release and the new direction she's decided to take with her music. Ivancie began her musical career five years ago as an acoustic artist, attracted to music as a "beautiful connector of emotion" and "a forefront for a lot of the change that happens in the world." If you've ever heard her play an acoustic set, you know what a powerful experience it can be to hear her belt it out. Her voice as a singer-songwriter remains central to her music even as she breaks into a whole new genre. So why electronic music? "I just followed my heart," explains Ivancie. "I had been sitting in with deejays and really just realizing that this music does something completely different to me as a singer. I like to dance to it a lot, I go out and listen to it a lot, so I figured I had to make this transition at some point." You're going to love the new direction she's taken her music. Be sure to watch her charming interview above, find her on Facebook, and keep your eye on this one—she's going places.

Check out more at: http://pdxpick.com/music/bands/the-cry The Cry! has one rule of being in a band: "Don't suck." It's not as facetious as it sounds. These guys tell it like it is—often in refreshingly irreverent, shameless, profanity-laced terms—and when it comes to making music, they really do take that rule seriously. "When it comes time to take the stage, you've gotta be professional, and you've gotta throw it down like a champion," Brian told us. And boy, do they. It's clear that they take every aspect of their music to heart, right down to the style of clothing they wear (watch the interview to find out why). Their music, a tough, rowdy, utterly cool mixture of 70's punk and 60's pop, definitely stands out from the crowd. They're only playing two shows this summer, so don't miss their performance Friday at the Tonic Lounge. After you watch the interview, be sure to find them on Facebook, YouTube, or at their website: thecrypdx.com.

Check out more at: http://pdxpick.com/music/bands/acoustic-minds Don’t let the name fool you –Acoustic Minds brings it to the dancefloor. Twins Jenni and Amanda Price quit their day jobs in 2008 to accelerate their already successful careers as singers and songwriters. Acoustic Minds came together ten years ago as a trio but has evolved into a five-piece dance pop band, based here in Portland, OR. It wasn’t until their employer offered them promotions in 2008 when they were faced with the dilemma of which direction they wanted to head with their lives. After singing together since the age of 3, they were at a fork in the road. The ladies could have taken the promotions and grown their careers in the corporate world, or pursued their passions in the music industry. Picking passion over desk jobs, Amanda, Jenni, and the rest of the band are four albums in, and they continue to formulate musical masterpieces.

        • The Dandy Warhols - Interview

Check out more at: http://pdxpick.com/music/bands/the-dandy-warhols More than a decade before IFC's Portlandia, The Dandy Warhols presented the nation with a tongue-in-cheek homage to the "Urban Bohemia" lifestyle for which our city is famous. Their first major hit, "Bohemian Like You," articulated Portland's hipster archetype long before Fred and Carrie made it cool. That song's popularity was what guitarist Peter Holmström called "the pinnacle" of the band being "at the right place at the right time," but they say they also knew from the very beginning that they'd struck "the right formula" for creating the type of music that listeners wanted to hear. The Portland-based ensemble, of course, took off pretty quickly to become an international success, and they're still thriving after nearly twenty years of making music together.

Music by Magic Fades Film by PDX Pop Now (past and present board members)! PDX Pop Now! 2013 July 19-21st pdxpopnow.com For our 10 year anniversary celebration this year we didn't just show up to a Portland park with Chinese wishing lanterns. Nor did we just show up with sparklers bought just across the border. We showed up with a birthday cake and a cupcake for each of the bands graciously donating their time to keep our all volunteer festival free to the public, for a local festival that we just have to put on every year because we love this local music scene so much. Everything else was CGI. What started out as a listserv created as a means to keep a finger on the pulse of the cities' sound, has grown exponentially into an amazing three day festival that allows Portland to have its own voice on its own stage. This would not be possible without the tireless dedication of volunteers, musicians, sponsors, and a community of supporters whom continually offer their guidance, dedication, and love. Thank you for believing in PDX Pop Now! Thank you for believing in Portland music! Track "Sims Hunk" by Magic Fades.
