This was another job that I was 'volunteered' to do - the re-commissioning of the Royal Navy shore establishment HMS Excellent, is in Portsmouth, Hampshire. Although there is always going to be a certain amount of ceremonial that needs to be covered during these sorts of occasion, but I thought that I'd show some of the background preparations and ordinary activities happening during the build-up to the big event as well. This was one-person shoot, essentially an ENG cameraman's job, so I did most of the shoot from a tripod and off the shoulder where I needed to be mobile. Originally shot on a Sony 537 with SP-Umatic back and edited on a 3-machine linear system; this version is from a VHS copy, so the Luma / Chroma and sound levels have all suffered over the years. As there was no budget the only music is ambient from the event.

It was time for the Southsea Food Festival again, and I decided to go down and try to put across a 'flavour' of the event that was very well attended. Once again I had to voice this report myself, which never sounds good, so this time I decided to fill the gaps with some music ! Shot with my Sony PD170 and edited with Premiere CS3 before converting the file to FLV in order to load it onto the website.

The Prime Minister wanted a survey to be carried out to see just how happy people were, so we went out to ask the good people of Portsmouth just how happy they were. The reporter for this was John Thompson, shot on my Sony PD170 and edited on Premiere CS3 before being converted to FLV for uploading to the website.

As the station needed material for the site we were more than willing to put up requests for information from the polices, but tried to make them look as interesting as possible - if the presentation is not boring then it has a better chance of being watched, which also raises the chance of somebody responding to that appeal. We actually went out and shot footage of the streets where the incidents occurred, and John Thompson's avuncular delivery really helps to convey the message. Shot on my Sony PD170 and edited on Premiere CS3 before being converted to FLV for upload to the website.
