      • Stolen Banksy Slave Labour & Nun Nicer

        from TAG / Added

Slave Labour is 4ft x 5ft and it was expected to sell for around $700,000. Banksy artwork taken in north London withdrawn from sale, The new mural that appeared on the north London wall depicts a woman in a nun's habit, but it is not known if it is by Banksy._BBC Before the sale was scheduled to begin, Mr Thut said that he had been inundated with angry phone calls from the UK, but insisted that the artwork was not stolen. _The Telegraph A solicitor for property firm Wood Green Investments, which owns the Poundland site where the Banksy was painted, told the Financial Times: "If they deny removing the mural they will become embroiled in an international criminal investigation that has already involved the FBI, but if they admit to consenting to (its removal) then they will become the target of abuse. "As a consequence, the advice to my client has been to say nothing." _The Telegraph Meanwhile, as one mural mystery continues to smolder, another has begun. The Daily Mail reports that a new mural, showing a woman in a nun’s habit and a small rat, has gone up in Slave Labour’s place. The rat is holding a sign that asks, simply, “Why?” It is unclear whether Banksy was involved in the new installation. Reports are mixed, and he doesn’t give interviews. _Durability+Design

Video from Indymedia Brum. Saturday 8th December marked the start of a week of action against workfare and shops that profit from the free labour supplied by the taxpayer. In Birmingham anti-workfare protesters gathered outside Poundland, a local company using workfare. As the protest began to grow the group decided to move off in search of other shops using workfare. They didn't have to walk far when round the corner they arrived at Argos, a particularly unpopular shop amongst Birmingham Workfare activists. In Birmingham last year, Boycott Workfare was told by someone who applied for a temp job at Argos, but didn’t get it and then subsequently got sent there on workfare that they had more people on workfare than paid temps. In light of this the group made the decision to occupy the shop and managed to handout over a thousand leaflets. After Argos the next stop on the Workfare tour was Superdrug where flyers were handed out before moving on to the last stop on the tour McDonald’s. Here the protesters were joined by Birmingham Food not Bombs activists who set up a stall outside McDonald’s and began handing out free vegan burgers.
