Inspired by the Girl Scout "Wonders of Water Journey", these Girl Scouts tell the story of Illinois and rain. Once upon a time, Illinois was covered by prairies and wetlands. But as the pioneers moved west, the prairies were turned into farmland. Then more people came, and they built houses and roads, parking lots and buildings. With all that progress, it seems like people forgot about the rain. Now when it rains, the water doesn't get a chance to soak into the ground. Stormwater runoff leads to the ponds and the rivers, carrying pollution with it from the chemicals we put on our yards and the salt we use on the streets. The pollution hurts the fish and other critters in the water. One of the ways we can help is to bring back the prairies and wetlands. Prairie and wetland plants help water to soak into the ground, filtering out pollution and recharging the water for our drinking wells. You can plant a prairie in your own backyard or by your neighborhood pond. Prairies and wetlands save water, filter out pollution, provide a home for animals, and make the fish happy! Over the years, through their contributions and as volunteers, hundreds of Friends of Pheasant Branch Conservancy members have supported the restoration and education efforts and activities that have availed the Conservancy wilderness area to classroom students and teachers. Middleton Cross Plains District and neighboring school districts have joined forces in providing these essential collaborations that open up the four walls of art & science classrooms to the real natural world of Pheasant Branch Conservancy. The Friends' Education Committee and Restoration & Management Committee have funded naturalists and programming to bring the student to these outside protected spaces as they become attuned to their connection and belonging to the wilderness environment, reflected in the native plant communities and wildlife in the Pheasant Branch Conservancy.

Through the support of members and volunteers, the Friends of Pheasant Branch Conservancy have helped restore, protect and promote acres of prairie, wetlands, woodlands and savanna. Land that has been recovered from former farmland, unprotected wetlands and grazed savannas is now lovingly managed as urban wilderness through the efforts of the Friends to avail these native plant communities to wildlife and human visitors alike. The Friends will celebrate their 20th anniversary in 2015.
