In 1999 I set out to make my first feature film. I was 19, highly emotional, selfish, delusional, a little bit reckless, and kind of a pussy. Maybe also (or just actually) bi-polar - manic to depressed spectrum? I began shooting scenes on 16mm to compile the film, since the movie was technically to fulfill the requirements of my junior Film 1 class at Pratt. I pieced together the "scenes" that i set out to shoot and in that, roughly edited together a two hour plus story of a boy pretending to be anorexic in hopes of winning the love and admiration of a girl he once overheard may have had an eating disorder…could have been anorexia, maybe bulimia…in like freshman year of high school…"yeah, call her up and see if she'll do it." I was watching a lot of Fred Astaire musicals in which he always got the girl in the end by borderline psychotic means, globetrotting, disguises, dancing around, all in grand elaboration and with great cost - but always with success. Courting and not stalking. I was really studying My Fair Lady and even citing Pygmalion as a deeper reference beyond that… although i have not and am still not intending on reading the original source material. Not even sure the author. No self-respecting target audience hipster would ever admit they were not familiar with the reference and would see it unquestioning as just what it sounds like in conversation, as an obscure yet classical reference. It worked and will continue to. Bold gestures seemed the safe and surest route. So perhaps an eating disorder relapse would be the ideal place to forge an intimate relationship with lots of intense fucking and then blossom into adulthood as i become a performance artist star. Dark and mysterious and always a little mis-understood. Refine the finer moments, the funny moments, the drama, the real, and the implied/embellished. There's probably all sorts of already written bullshit conceptual art theories on the moral imperatives vs. the cathartic optimism of the physical editing process which is orchestrated by the after the fact mental delusional aspects that set into the mind during an editing process of any kind. Maybe someone might even pontificate on the higher search for truth in the images. I do remember some search or interest in an absence of cinematography. It comes easy with poor planning and very basic equipment knowledge. - Nostalgia - In 2014, 34, I feel like I might have matured a lot since then. I am about to have a child of my own. A boy, whom I now tell myself in my head that "if i want him to grow up to be a strong man, I had better start acting like one so he could have a better male role model" . in the 14 years since, I gained some weight, lost some again…balanced out. Learned how to actually go about bedding women successfully and honestly, and with purpose and passion whilst keeping Kickstarter accounts to respectable, sporadic frequency. Day job is now a career. Theaters are closing left and right, there are 10,000+ film festivals, but no one is ever really sure when they are and tickets are probably sold out. Everyone watches on their computer, it's just easier. In going back i've had the option to cut out lines, rearrange scenes. In some chosen instances to better my own image. To make the past appear different than it was - maybe to tell the story differently. Maybe to make myself sound better, not so much like a mumbling creep. Or to play that up. To wonder if i was conscious enough to act out "acting out". & To wonder and hope that i'm still not this crazy. I can safely say now that anorexic/bulimic deep dark place was a passing phase, a temporary fascination, yet still somehow a hot-button issue for some reason, more so amongst women. Someone with an eating disorder is still very interesting to me, but something now more akin to a goth or any girl making a real, going to auditions and getting jobs model. Making a real attempt in an industry where it's just the norm and always will be, so go all the way if you want a real chance. There's no campaign to make the NFL players smaller so if fair for everyone. Omitting seems a better definition for something which has already been edited. I thought i was a pussy then, i know for sure that i was right. If you want to potentially stick your dick in a women's pussy - act like it.
