I was doing field work in Kirindy, Madagascar in June 2012 when I saw something move in the leaf litter out of the corner of my eye. I looked more closely, and couldn't believe what I saw! A praying mantis like I'd never seen before, with amazing camouflage. Its abdomen and joints look strikingly like dead leaves. (It's Chopardempusa neglecta described by Paulian in 1958. Thanks to mantis expert Dr. Gavin J. Svenson for the ID.)

Over the past year I was inspired to create a video of all of the beautiful life I get to see throughout the spring and summer. My idea was to create a high quality edit that would remind me and any viewers of the spectacular world we live in and perhaps inspire them to remember to appreciate it. I guess this is me expressing the appreciation I have for life. I would like to dedicate this to my beloved Granny, who I was never able to show this to. I know that her spirit lives on in all of the life around me, everywhere I go. I hope you all can enjoy this and maybe take a moment to remember a good reason to smile. For this video, I used a song called Pine Trees by Jake Bugg. Camera used was the Canon Rebel T3i with the only stabilization method being an old tripod.
