During the partial government shutdown of 2013, an expert panel of historians and policy analysts convened in Washington, DC, to discuss the presence of Abraham Lincoln's legacy in contemporary politics. Organized by Lincoln historian and moderator Matthew Pinsker (Dickinson College), the panel also included presidential historian Richard Norton Smith (George Mason University), Lincoln scholar Craig Symonds (U.S. Naval Academy), author and policy analyst Michael Lind (co-founder of The New America Foundation), and historian James Swanson (Senior Scholar at The Heritage Foundation). While Ford's Theatre, the originally-intended site for the discussion, was closed during the government shutdown, the event took place at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Northwest DC.

Shawn Otto believes at least one of those debates should have been focused on national science policy. Presidents can shape the course of science research and even specific projects while in office. Do we know enough about where the candidates stand on questions of science? Is the country ready for a national dialogue on science policy?
