THE IMPACT OF SMOKING PREVENTION MESSAGES IN CHINA Smoking, especially for males in China, is a major public health crisis. The number of smokers in China has increased from 300 million in 2010 to 350 million in 2014. Smoking is confounded by government ownership of the tobacco monopoly. Dr. Bresnahan and Ms. Zhuang will discuss three message-based smoking studies conducted in China: the first examined individual versus family-based anti-smoking messages with middle school students in a suburb of Beijing, China; the second investigated gain/loss antismoking messages with college students in Shanghai; and the third assessed normative anti-smoking messages with employees in a factory that had adopted a smoke-free policy in 2011. Future research includes an anti-smoking intervention using anticipated regret with elderly men in China.

n February 2015 Herwig and I have been at Ronnie Schildknecht’s* home in Samstagern close by Zurich, a beautiful place at the lake of Zurich. The purpose of the trip was to record Ronnie interviewing me. Last year the two of us developed this idea of swapping roles. We thought that it would be interesting and challenging for both of us, if Ronnie interviewed me. No sooner said than done. The questions were completely Ronnie’s. This time I didn't have to prepare questions and dig into a special topic before, a very nice feeling once in a while. The only thing I had to do was staying focused and concentrated, and not to fall into the blah trap and bore the audience. *Ronnie is pro triathlete, 7 times winner of IRONMAN Switzerland and was the first man on US soil crossing the finish line under 8 hours.

Story: Protecting young vulnerable women from human trafficking in Moldova Production: Markus Haist | 6:30 min | English Themes: Activism/People Power, Arts & Media (in social change) Moldova is one of the poorest countries in Europe. Many people leave their homes in the country tucked in between Ukraine and Romania to find work in Moscow, Kiev or in the West in order to provide for their families who stay behind. Most of the time the children stay with their grand parents. Without any real perspective in life and no protection they are easy prey to human traffickers. For almost 20 years the danish couple Charlotte and Johannes Petersen and their organization Pilgrims International have worked in Moldova to help the people with humanitarian needs. In the fall of 2014 they met with me in Germany and the idea of making a short movie about a project that provides a safe place for these vulnerable young girls was born. This was the start of „Shelter“. End of January I travelled to Moldova for 5 days. I had the chance to meet many wonderful people and do all the interviews and filming on the original locations. I was very impressed by the tireless effort of Johannes and Charlotte and their team and the honest, hands-on approach of helping people in need.
