On May 16, 2010, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Newcastle, Maine honored one of the most famous women you've never heard of. Frances Perkins was the first woman to hold a position on a presidential cabinet. Secretary of Labor for 12 years during FDR's administration, Perkins is widely accepted as the chief author of the New Deal, and the creator of Social Security. A devout Episcopalian, Perkins was honored this year by the Episcopal Church as a Holy Person - a modern day, protestant "saint." This is from the May ceremony at St. Andrew's and an excerpt from an upcoming documentary on Perkins' extraordinary life.
