TOM Talks are inspirational talks which Cawthron staff deliver to their colleagues each fortnight. Here, Jonathan Puddick discusses freshwater cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and, in particular, the benthic cyanobacteria which grow in many New Zealand rivers: "#ToxicAlgaeNZ: Harmful cyanobacteria in our waterways and the risks to pets and wildlife in the Nelson/Tasman region" Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) are becoming increasingly prevalent in New Zealand’s freshwater bodies. These microscopic organisms occur naturally, but an increase in nutrients from deforestation, agriculture and urbanisation has resulted in cyanobacteria proliferation in aquatic environments. Under favourable conditions, cyanobacteria cells can multiply and form planktonic (suspended in the water column) blooms or dense benthic (attached to the substrate) mats. An increasing number of cyanobacterial species are known to natural produce toxins, commonly called cyanotoxins. These pose a serious threat to humans and animals when consumed in drinking water or by contact during recreational activities. The mechanisms of toxicity for cyanotoxins are very diverse, ranging from hepatotoxicity and neurotoxicity, to dermatotoxicity. In New Zealand there has been an increasing number of animal poisonings and deaths related to cyanobacteria. Of particular concern are recent dog deaths after contact with cyanobacteria in rivers. There have been multiple dog deaths in the Nelson/Tasman region over the last 5 years This presentation with provide an overview of freshwater cyanobacteria, the toxins they produce and what to know to stay safe.

Fashion Show Highlight Client: Workers' Information Center (WIC) For more information: http://wic.unitedsisterhood.org/production.php --- Messages in the video Many world famous apparel brands are produced in Cambodia, including H&M, Old Navy/Gap, Nike, Puma, Salomon, Adidas/Reebok, Joe Fresh, Marks & Spencer, Levi's, Champion and Tommy Hilifiger. These brands are known globally for their quality, attractiveness and price. They have thousands of stores and branches and hundreds of thousands of employees. Their CEOs such Gap Inc. earned up to $19 million per year. Furthermore, these companies make tremendous annual profits such as Marks and Spencer makes of approximately $770 million and H&M makes about $2.62 billion in 2013. Cambodia's textile industry employs about 700,000 workers . We work ten to twelve hours a day, six or seven days a week, earning a minimum wage of $100 per month in 2014 ($80 in 2013). We cannot survive on these wages when you consider average expenses and the high living costs on basic services with an average of $150 per month, including: - Rent $10 - Utilities $6 - Food $79 - Family remittances $30 - Supplies $9 - Healthcare $6 - Transportation $10 Many of us fall into debt and illness. We have limited access to education and few job opportunities, and we face exploitation, discrimination, stigmatisation and violence from employers, landlords, authorities and the public. We, the Cambodian garment workers want dignity and a decent living, just like everyone else! All we are asking for is simply: having an equal treatment and opportunity to have access to higher education, adequate health care, sufficient food, safe environment and decent living the same as children of the rich! We believe all the big fashion brands can pay workers fairly and still make their profit! Act together to show how responsible you are!
