Public Forum creates a friendly platform to dismantle fundamental myths. Imagine a mix of Family Feud, Let's Make a Deal, the front page of the newspaper, and the best college seminar class you ever took. The game show creates a space for topics that many times are not spoken about publicly, with the goal of helping people learn, grow, and act differently in the world as a result. Topics were suggested by people in Birmingham. http://visitsteve.com http://spaceoneeleven.org Slightly longer version with more interviews here: https://vimeo.com/105947657

The Rutgers University Debate Union (RUDU) presents Parliamentary style debate rounds of Public Forum topics. RUDU, one of the country's leading parliamentary debate teams, will debate each PF (high school) resolution in parli format to help illustrate the logic and rhetoric that can be employed on the topic. Parliamentary style is a longer format that relies on logic and persuasion instead of facts and evidence. While the research necessary for PF will not be included in these rounds, the arc of the argumentation should be invaluable in generating ideas for PF topics. The first of the series is on the June 2011 (NFL Nationals) resolution, which is Resolved: That the United States should intervene in another nation's struggle for democracy. Government (Pro) is represented by Gordon Morrisette and Ashley Novak, while Opposition (Con) is represented by Storey Clayton and David Reiss. Morrisette, Novak, and Clayton will all be staffing the Scarlet Knight Public Forum Debate Camp in Piscataway, NJ this July and August.

Richmond Ballet, The State Ballet of Virginia, and the CenterStage Foundation co- sponsored a seminar entitled “The Glass Slipper Ceiling” as part of the statewide arts event, MINDS WIDE OPEN: Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts. The panel discussion was held April 28, 2010, at the newly-renovated Richmond CenterStage and will focus on the rarity of female artistic directors in ballet companies. The idea for the seminar was inspired by the 2007 New York Times article by Claudia La Rocco entitled, “Often on Point but Rarely in Charge.” Richmond Ballet Artistic Director Stoner Winslett is one of five female artistic directors of major ballet companies in the United States. Joining her on the panel will be Suzanne Farrell (The Suzanne Farrell Ballet of Washington, DC), Celia Fushille (Smuin Ballet of San Francisco), Victoria Morgan (Cincinnati Ballet), and Dorothy Gunther Pugh (Ballet Memphis). Former New York Times Chief Dance Critic Anna Kisselgoff will moderate the panel discussion. For more information, please visit www.richmondballet.com, www.vamindswideopen.org.
