The TransBoard Project aims to revolutionise city transport, reduce congestion and improve environmentally sustainable travel to lower carbon emissions in cities. TransBoard is a unique travel service which can be rented in a similar way to 'Boris Bikes'. Although the service could be adapted to many cities, I started this project with a strong focus on London Transport as a prime example of a city ready for this type of urban development. A city where green areas are highly valued, urban living spaces are ever improving and public transport is rapidly innovating. Problems I aim to combat with this invention are: A) Carbon Emissions - An urgent issue with cities today that must be tackled from all angles B) Congestion - An overcrowded infrastructure for public transport that must deal with a growing population for the future C) Heavy Baggage - People may avoid public transport if they have heavy bags to carry with them D) Dangerous roads for cyclists - There are missed opportunities for alternative travel utilising the safety of the pavement E) Road Traffic - City streets that are often at a standstill partly due to a large portion of Londoners who refuse to use public transport F) Pedestrian information - General public unawareness of short walking routes which are often quicker than riding the Underground for short distances G) Public Health - More than half of adult Londoners are overweight or obese. This is where exercise comes in.

Intelligent transport solutions (ITS) such as automated fare collection using smart cards and real-time vehicle position data have made using public transport easier for users and have enabled transport operators to monitor and actively manage service delivery. At the same time, the huge amounts of data that ITS generate remained so far widely underutilized for public transport planning. The development of this prototype MATSim application leverages on the richness of already existing data sources to more simulate public transport systems of entire cities at an unprecedented level of details and predict the impact of future scenarios. Fare collection data collected in Singapore is used for describing travel times between stops at different times of the day and modelling the time it takes for people to board and alight depending on bus type, number of people and crowdedness level. The travel demand is also directly derived from the smart card data. Putting together supply and demand using the agent-based transport simulation software MATSim (www.matsim.org) turns Big Data into Smart Data that allows predictive modelling. Existing transport planning software is not suited to these problems as there is currently no package available in the market that accounts for dynamic phenomena like traffic congestion, variable demand, vehicle bunching as well as varying vehicle capacities and dwell durations. Moreover, they are not designed to make full use of the highly disaggregated data that ITS systems provide, but are optimized for data that is aggregated over time and space, such as hourly or daily trip matrices. In contrast, the concept of large-scale agent-based transport simulation, capable of modelling transport systems of whole cities and even small countries with millions of users with full daily operational dynamics over the course of a day, corresponds directly to the new forms of data that have become available through the introduction of ITS. We acknowledge LTA for providing the underlying data and Senozon (senozon.com) for the visualising software.

                      What are Tags?

                      Tags

Tags are keywords that describe videos. For example, a video of your Hawaiian vacation might be tagged with "Hawaii," "beach," "surfing," and "sunburn."
