It wasn't just the athletes at London 2012 making an Olympian effort; as the official computing partner of the games, Acer provided 13,500 desktop computers, 2,900 notebooks, 950 servers and 350 dedicated staff working behind the scenes to ensure that every score was recorded, every time was clocked and that every media outlet was served with the results in the blink of an eye. Proving themselves on the biggest stage and on the grandest scale is one thing, but how do you compete with Mo Farah, Usain Bolt and co for the public’s attention? Acer's answer was to create a branded experience for visitors to the Olympic Park. Almost as important as the work behind the scenes, the pavilion needed to convey the brand, tap into the atmosphere associated with the games and showcase the best of Acer technology to the visiting crowd. A huge success, the ‘Acer Journey’ experience managed to directly engage with thousands of visitors and feed into the excitement surrounding the Olympics. Not simply a computer showroom, but an interactive experience, blending sporting achievements with technological greatness. Mesmerising visitors as they entered the experience was the striking ‘Journey Sphere’ - aka a PufferSphere XL. Pulsating with a stream of particles, the inflatable projection sphere was suspended in the middle of a ring of interactive tablets, with each particle charting the success of the players who surrounded it. Forming a centrepiece, our digital projection sphere provided an absorbing scoreboard to track visitor's progress as they played games on the Acer technology below. Programmed by interactive design specialists Open Platform, the competitive spirit of the Olympics was replicated using technology, allowing users and observers to easily view how they were performing compared to their rivals on the neighbouring tablet. Thanks go to everyone involved in the project, including brand designers Pico Conepts who designed and built the sponsor pavilion. AN INTERACTIVE EXHIBITION On the 17th of July 2012, the interactive exhibition, Audi Sphere, was launched in front of Christiansborg Palace, the seat of the Danish Parliament in Copenhagen. In three large spheres visitors can experience key aspects of Audi’s cutting edge technology: Audi ultra, which is at the spearhead of lightweight automotive construction, Audi e-tron, the future of electrical mobility, and Audi connect – a networking strategy for all Audi vehicles. The exhibition is open until the 5th of August 2012. THE SPHERES In the connect sphere you can select a series of movies explaining networked driving by interacting with a playful, spherical multi-touch display. The selected movies are then projected onto the inside of the connect sphere, creating an immersive cinematic experience. In the ultra sphere you can move a large scanner display around a lightweight space frame construction. The scanner display shows a dynamical match of the completed car that merges with the space frame construction, seen from the user's perspective. In addition the scanner display reveals spatially distributed animations and information about specific ultra components along the scanners paths. Finally, visitors in the e-tron sphere can conceptually power the Audi e-tron Spyder, by putting wind turbines into motion and watch them transmit energy through a complex LED layout covering the space from wind turbines to the car. Conceived by KMS Blackspace and SCHMIDHUBER, working with Danish interactive design specialists Kollision and AV experts Creative Technology, Audi set out to show off their future brand ambitions through a high profile experiential marketing installation. Filling three giant spheres with a range of interactive and futuristic technology which included augmented reality video pads, giant video walls and concept cars, each sphere represented one of Audi’s future brand priorities; lightweight design, electric cars and their impact on the environment. Amongst other technological delights within the spheres, visitors were met with another smaller sphere, this one an interactive spherical screen from Pufferfish. Designers deployed the digital palantir as a control screen to cue and control video content mapped to the inside surface of the main spherical structure. Users negotiated a universe of constellations, each triggering a different showreel on the curved wall in front of them. As a 3D object, the PufferSphere represents a unique balance between a screen medium and sculpture, enticing guests to approach, engage with the core messages and ultimately shape the content of the environment surrounding them. Synonymous with ultra-reliable engineering excellence, Babcock have been at the forefront of precise engineering support services for over a century. When they were looking for an effective display to showcase their presence at an upcoming trade show they chose to use a PufferSphere to translate their tagline ‘Trusted to Deliver’ into a tangible outlet. Displaying at the world’s leading defence and security show, DSEI, Babcock were looking to make an impression and engage with as many of the 32,000 visitors from 121 countries as possible. A huge opportunity to build on existing relationships and win new business, they chose to use an interactive PufferSphere M600 display to set themselves apart from their competition and stop the flow of traffic past their stand. A concept pitched and delivered by the team at Real Creative Marketing, the in-house software programming team from Pufferfish worked closely with both Babcock and Real Creative Marketing to build and deliver our most complex multi-layered application to date. Offering two modes, video and presentation, the sphere could be changed from branded video messages to interactive globe at the touch of a button. This allowed the sales team manning the stand to leave the display to do what it does best, attract gazes from across the aisle and draw inquisitive visitors on to the stand. Once on the stand, the sphere was able to be changed from ‘attractor mode’ into an interactive globe. Covered with pre-determined touch points, the globe temporarily became part of the sales team, allowing staff on the booth to start conversations, talk visitors through their operations, scope and previous work through videos, animations and interactive elements placed at each hot-spot. The display proved to be a great success for the show and was used to entertain and inform foreign ministers and dignitaries from around the world as well as initiate and facilitate valuable conversations with potential new clients. A huge thank you goes to Roger from Real Creative Marketing for coordinating both the use of the display and also the design of the application used, it was a pleasure working with him and the team at Babcock. If anyone needed any additional persuading to visit the Bahamas besides the pristine white beaches, colourful culture, year round sunshine and laid back rum cocktails then our PufferSphere may help provide the final push… Collaborating once again with the Bahamas Tourist Board at this year’s World Travel Market in London, our sphere was placed front and centre on their stand with the aim to entice visitors from the aisle to the islands! Doing just that, the sphere grabbed the attention of passing visitors, in no small part due to the mesmerising clips of island life from one of the most picturesque locations in the world. Pufferfish joined B and I's Anthon Greevelink and his crack-team of balloonists at the Westergasfabrik in Amsterdam as they delivered a stunning installation for the FD Magazine's Outlook Summit 2008. The PufferSphere XL perfectly complemented Anthon's comprehensive selection of Airstar balloons, and added an exciting new dimension to the breadth of his client offering.

Fresh after completing one museum installation on our doorstep, our next job could hardly have been further away. Hopping on a plane and flying across the world we swapped Edinburgh for Kuala Lumpur to install our first tablet controlled permanent display. The client this time was Bank Negara Malaysia, the Central Bank of Malaysia, who have recently designed and built a museum and art gallery within their new headquarters. Looking for a museum piece equally as exciting and intriguing as their new building, they came across Pufferfish and were interested to know what we could provide for their space. The Bank wanted to create an intuitive global visulisation allowing visitors to explore the world of Islamic Finance. The system should invite users to navigate the globe themselves via a touch screen display. The software must also be updatable, allowing the Bank to add new points of interest and stories to keep the display current. Utilising a bespoke 1.5m HardBall sphere coupled with an iPad and audio system, we proposed hanging a PufferSphere M system from the ceiling in the centre of the room – creating the impression of a floating planet. Placed in the Islamic Finance Gallery, the floating sphere was transformed from passive video player into an interactive exhibit via the iPad control. Users can rotate the globe by simply moving their finger across the flat map displayed on the iPad, and can select hotspots which trigger full sphere video focuses on specific regions, allowing them to explore areas of the world where Islamic Finance operates. Always pleased to attend a party, our PufferSpheres have had invitations to everything from black tie dinners and award ceremonies on our doorstep to music festivals and corporate product launches on the other side of the world. Each event brings its own excitement, its own pressures and its own fun, but nothing can compare to the PufferSpheres latest outing at Burning Man Festival. World famous for being an ‘experiment in community art’, Burning Man takes place in the middle of Nevada’s Black Rock Desert and sees over 65,000 people co-exist in elaborately built camps and entertainment arenas for 7 days. Initially hesitant to recommend using a PufferSphere in such a harsh environment, it was only after speaking to our latest PufferPartner and Burning Man aficionado, Travis Holm that we knew he was the perfect partner to rise to the challenge of dust and dessert proofing an interactive PufferSphere XL. Joining Travis and 65,000 other ‘Burners’ was one lucky member of the PufferTeam who helped rig the sphere as part of a 1980’s themed nightclub in the ‘Planet Earth’ camp. Fitting in perfectly amongst an array of sculptures, art cars and elaborate entertainment venues; the interactive PufferSphere XL added to an already other worldly setting. Thrilled to not only welcome a new American PufferPartner to the family, but also to have become ‘Burners’ for a week, huge thanks go to Travis and the team at Ouroboros Sphere. Dark Star is an interactive multimedia installation which I produced during my six week residency at Mota in Ljubljana. Onlookers interact with the installation by pointing at a particular star which then grows and reveals its own individual characteristic. Eventually there will be hundreds of different stars each with their own sound and graphics but currently there are only five, one of which can be seen here. The project uses SuperCollider, OpenFrameworks and a Kinect for the tracking.

When you can create an interactive digital world, then the real world becomes your oyster. At least that’s what we felt when we jetted into stylish Paris to work with naval defence experts DCNS. Using our PufferSphere M600 display to create a digital interactive globe, DCNS invited users to explore touch points around the globe calling up data on the vessels, facilities and personnel present in each region. Giving guests the opportunity to gain their own understanding of the scale and scope of DCNS’s global operations, each hotspot opened up a browseable cover-flow, inviting guests to discover the company’s global reach. Few visitors to the stand could resist reaching out and touching the sphere to see what it would do, with the magnetic nature of the display as an object leading them onward to discover services and products whilst rewarding their natural curiosity! Thanks to our ever brilliant German partners Satis&Fy for providing the sphere and to Empriente Digitale for commissioning the application on behalf of DCNS.
