Pulse Proposal for 2015 LUX Wellington Festival Site: The wharf cut-out between Circa Theatre and Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington, New Zealand Pulse © Daniel K. Brown Music for 2 cellos, violin, harp and tympanum © Mark K. Johnson Digital animation assistance: Johann Nortje PULSE refers to the pulse of time (eternity) as well as the pulse of life (blood flowing through our veins). The PULSE connects all cultures around the world. It is universal to us all. Digital Projections Concentric circles of light are projected from the walkway of the TePapa Museum wharf cut-out into the dark space beneath the wharf to the south. When the circles hit vertical pilings or choppy water or rocky outcrops, the perfect circles of light distort as well as reflect in other directions. In this way, the artwork changes constantly. The animation plays for 5 minutes 50 seconds before fading away. Visitors are invited to press the start button on the walkway to bring PULSE to life again. The PULSE of time and the PULSE of life transform continually in response to the people around us. A sound tone triggers the first pulse, which moves out from the darkened space and then back in again, increasing in intensity and complexity. The circles of light return as “echoes” -- the horizontal equivalent of a "depth sounding". The distortion of the circles enables us to decipher the topography of the pilings and outcrops in the mysterious, darkened space beneath the wharf. PULSE addresses the dichotomy between the static nature of the architectural construct and the dynamic nature of the individual’s perception of space. The work questions the interrelationships between order and disorder, motion and stasis. Soundscape The principal melody for PULSE, established by Cello 1, was generated from the number of syllables per word in the Latin text of one of the psalms of the dead, Psalm 76(i). Rhythmically, every time a new word starts, the time signature changes to accommodate the number of syllables. The Harp follows the identical rhythmic scheme as Cello 1 but delayed by one beat. Cello 2 cycles through one loud pulse of six beats, then one medium and one soft relentlessly throughout. The Violin enters exactly one beat after each rest in the cello melody, using only 3 pitches and alternating between whichever pitch is not used directly below it by one of the other instrumental voices. The Tympanum strikes every 4 beats until the end, louder when it falls on the first beat of a measure. Seascape When the south-facing projections of PULSE are not playing, four lamps illuminate underwater to the north (fading out whenever the projections begin again). Five polished spheres hover approximately one metre below low tide (depth determined by water clarity at the time), held on tethers and anchored to the seabed. They sway softly with the currents, appearing most visible at low tide. The underwater lamps make the below visible from above. Mysteries are uncovered. Discoveries occur.

Craig & I flying at Red Knoll Lookout. Craig flew his Pulse, F20 & Speedo MkII. I was flying my Wing Warriors Slope Scrappy. Landing area is quite rough... Lots of Rocks... Craig's solution, land the pulse in a tree... Worked well until he had to remove said model from tree and damaged a flap servo in the process...

simple emotional idea of a heartbeat is on a rhythmic mission to make you open up your heart. transferring the heartbeat from an individual to the outer world in the form of a circular wave means: sharing a heartbeat with the world. „with a beat. that’s how we started. we opened our eyes to everyone, everything, everywhere. we dreamt, loved, tried, created. and the world responded. with a beat. that’s how we grow. because when you listen to someone‘s heart, your own beats to the same rhythm. and the world beats to yours. just open your heart.“ this is UAE telco‘s first major advertising campaign since their launch in 2006. the campaign includes 2 x 50 sec, 2 x 30 sec, many 5 and 10 sec cutdowns and print - all, the spots are directed by matthias zentner and a series of 7 beautiful print ads photographed by matthias zentner and alexis fotiadis. the spot is a combination of pulses which are provoked on camera moves, movement of light, movement of objects, timelapse moves, stop motion moves and CGI circular waves in 3d. the heartbeat of the music became the pulse of life for the visual world. the philosophical anthem was shot on several locations in dubai and abu dhabi.
