At 12:30AM on a Wednesday morning, I bought a $30.00 bus ticket and boarded at an Exxon station in Richmond, Virginia. Six and a half hours later I found myself in the heart of Chinatown. It was November 17, 2011 and I was headed toward The Occupy Movement’s two-month anniversary and mass demonstration. Camera in hand, I documented over 30,000 people taking a stand in front of the world and demanding for progressive change.   I wanted to understand why these people had come together. Through the lens I explored the identity of this teeming mass of humanity, a generation at a pivotal moment of change and transformation. I had no expectations and no agenda. I began snapping pictures: the faces, the signs, the spirit. Energy radiated out of Zuccotti Park unlike anything I had ever experienced. My mission became to capture the intensity of the experience, and, more importantly, to share it.   Photography and media play instrumental roles in the interpretation of social and political movements. The role of the photographer can shift the emphasis of the coverage, determining how his or her message is digested. A photojournalist is constrained by his or her assignment to cover an event for a news organization. In contrast, I used the techniques of social documentarians. This style allows an artist to develop his or her own projects and to envision how they will link an audience to the underlying concept. For example, photographers Robert Frank and Susan Meiselas ask questions while in the field, constantly challenging public perception by presenting what they experience personally. During the Civil Rights Movement, photographer Danny Lyons’ work built a bridge between what was seen on the news and what was actually occurring. His art gave a voice to the unheard masses, sending wide a proclamation for human rights and the extermination of injustice.   When I was deciding how to present my images, I looked at the work of Xu Bing and Vic Muniz. My photographs celebrate individuals, making a powerful statement underneath a sea of ginkgo trees.  I chose the grid to reveal the unification of the isolated individuals into a mass, a population, the 99%. I present my video, a still frame animation of images, unedited in the exact order in which they were shot. The Rudeboy, “Pumped Up Kicks” remix conveys the momentum of the movement, building the contemporary soul that radiated enough energy to vibrate the towers on Wall Street.   Since my experience at Occupy, a mass-action demonstration has been organized in major cities around the world. At one point I stood as an outsider of the event. I am now an insider of the movement, and my portrayal intends to reflect what the outside prospective missed.

I made this video for some friends who have a band. The version of Pumped Up Kicks was wonderful, so we wanted a video for it. I recorded with them one day, some of our city tours (Santos, São Paulo, Brazil) and did a very basic editing using Vegas. I think it's cool.
