There was a day when a video camera was a bulky black box requiring a resting place on your shoulder or a tripod for steady shots– even then, the best you could hope for was a grainy VHS or Hi8 memory sure to fade along with the tape quality. Today, you can have digital HD quality in the palm of your hand with no tapes to worry about and files that play well with editing software and video sharing sites. TechVi’s newest contributor, Rich DeMuro, shows us 5 Pocket-Sized HD Camcorders. Distributed by Tubemogul.

Okay, so here's a retest with the Xacti using manual settings. The Xacti was configured as follows: - Stabilizer: OFF - Single-point AutoFocus - Exp Measure: Multi - ISO 50 - White Balance: Sunny - Exposure: Shutter Priority @ 1/500 (F3.5) - Face Chaser: OFF - High Sensitivity: OFF At these settings, the Xacti comes a lot closer to matching the MinoHD's picture. If I set the shutter to 1/250, then the bright areas seemed to get blown out, but 1/1000 didn't seem to get enough light at that aperture and ISO. Despite the MinoHD looking washed out comparatively, it is still a more accurate representation of what the eye sees. The Xacti does now manage to pick up detail in both shaded and brightly lit areas. I suspect this is due to not only to the shutter speed and ISO setting, but even moreso due to the single point autofocus and not using the electronic stabilization. It is interesting to note just how much a wider angle the Xacti lens has when the stabilizer is not being used. If only this camera had optical stabilization -- I'd bet it would be able to do pretty well even with the auto/program settings. The downside of all this is that there were a lot of settings that had to be tweaked just to make it semi-comparable to the MinoHD's picture. For my use, it just isn't practical to constantly have to tweak the settings, because by the time that's done, the moment will be lost and my son will have moved on to the next item of interest (and believe me, they come and go rapidly as other parents can attest!). So there it is. I really want to like this camera, but there are too many trade-offs that I would have to make. The search continues. UPDATE 6/17/09 - After a couple weeks of using this camera, I've actually come to like it more and more. I've been shooting more with the full program exposure mode, and I think that the single-point AF and Stabilization Off settings are the key to a good picture. By locking the aperture, the camera's limited to changing shutter speed in bright light conditions, and this doesn't always produce a desired result.

I was asked to upload a version of my comparison video with the Xacti's stabilization set to OFF. Keep in mind that this video was shot in the morning, so the lighting is the opposite of the previous video. I'll try to rectify that later today with a new vid. The motion blur does seem somewhat reduced, but the overall quality is still not as crisp as the MinoHD's. I think the lesson to be learned here is that to maintain the crisp picture quality, optical image stabilization is necessary. I think the very nature of how the electronic stabilization works contributes to the Xacti's "soft focus" appearance. The other thing that might improve the picture would be to change from the 9-pt autofocus to single point focusing. I sense another comparison video coming soon. Download the original file for a better look since my 1 HD upload as been used.

A short video shot in my backyard today to compare the picture quality between the incumbent MinoHD and the contender Xacti VPC-CG10 under the same conditions. Since the MinoHD does not have optical zoom, I kept the CG10 at full wide-angle. The CG10 did have image stabilization enabled and was set for 9-pt autofocus and program exposure. I have my own opinions on the two, but I don't want to influence discussions. What do you think? For best comparison, download the original file. To create this video, I used QT Pro's masking to get the side-by-side effect then exported it to a new QT movie. Then I used iMovie to add the titles and exported it at full 720p HD quality. UPDATE: Please see my other videos on these cameras as well as my comments below. A little more time using them made a bit of difference.

Tags are keywords that describe videos. For example, a video of your Hawaiian vacation might be tagged with "Hawaii," "beach," "surfing," and "sunburn."
