Mission: To provide veterinary care, and loving retirement homes for racing sled dogs from Iditarod, Yukon Quest, and professional sprint kennels. Who: The August Fund--A foundation for Alaska's retiring Iditarod sled dogs. Helping to rehome and/or provide vet care for retirees from Iditarod racing kennels. Applying for 501c3 status. Why: The Iditarod is known as the last great race on earth. More than 60 teams, comprised of one human driver of the dog sled (musher) and 16 dogs take off annually from Willow Alaska for a 1000 mile trek to Nome. The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is now in it's 42nd year. When you multiply 16 dogs by the number of teams entered each year, there will be roughly 1000 Alaskan Huskies on that trail competing to be the first team to Nome. What happens when a dog get too old to race, or has a career-ending injury, or even doesn't make the team? Some responsible mushers work with their fans to rehome their dogs whose racing career has ended, while others dump them on local shelters, or worse. The August Fund for Alaska Racing Dogs provides a humane alternative for mushers to place their dogs in loving homes. Fans of Iditarod and others are quite proud to adopt a dog that has such a history of miles and is generally well socialized and highly trained. Where: Our foundation works mainly in Alaska with individual mushers, shelters and other rescue organizations to act as a clearing house for Iditarod veteran dogs and to find appropriate homes for them after their racing days are done. We have and will rehome dogs Outside of Alaska. Donate: http://www.sponsume.com/project/help-iditarod-k9-athletes-find-homes-and-health-retirement

We walked along Michigan Avenue on Black Friday, 2009, to let people know that Dairyland Racetrack would be closing at the end of the year. This means the Chicago area was flooded with over 300 more greyhounds than usual. The update is that all were quickly able to be placed in loving homes, thanks to some great exposure in the media. Local groups like Greyhounds Only and the Greyhound Alliance provided food, shelter, and located permanent homes for these amazing dogs... yes, even silly ones dressed as presents.
