          • The Jewish at Recess

from Straight to Video Added 900 0 0

New York's favorite party dawgs, "The Jewish" playing at Recess Art Space on 07/21/2011. 41 Grand St, NYC. From the event's invite page: Dear fuckfaces, you're officially invited to witness something that has not happened in years, yes Kim Gordon is going to have a bowel movement, but that has nothing to do with this event that I'm currently hyping. I'm inviting you to see Endless Boogie.... do you realize how old these guys are? Seriously, they are so old, they're like dead and reincarnated and THEN DEAD AGAIN THEN REINCARNATED AGAIN. They are so old that they remember when one could legally smoke cigarettes at The Turkey's Nest. Also....get this. Matt Motherfucking Sweeney is playing guitar with a band called Soldiers of Fortune that's gonna play too. They are a "jam band" so yes bring a good book, No don't bring Road Movies that collection of Lee Ranaldo poems....I said a "good book" like Moby Dick, or maybe a Terry Richarson photo book that features pictures of Moby's Dick. I don't know. Just bring something to occupy your time... like a collection of puzzles or jumbles 'cause trust me... this band is fucking boring. Also in this band is Barry London. Barry used to work at Kim's Video on St. Marks Place and made five dollars an hour (under the table) back when Kim's was across the street (next to the Gap) and upstairs (not talking about Mondo Kim's here kids) anyway they used to rent VHS pornography and the manager was this gay guy named Frank that was famously mean to all customers (anyone remember him? kinda awful but a truly great nyc character), then this other guy named steve pulcalski (sic) managed the place. He was really into that movie World's Greatest Sinner and had this zine (yes it was the 90's) called Shock Cinema. Great stuff. Wait...why am I describing 2 managers of a long-defunct video store in an event description intended to entice you into actually attending? Also in the band is Brad Truax, now Brad worked at Kim's on St. Mark's too but now we're talking Mondo Kim's (no relation to Kim Gordon or her bowels) Brad used to smoke cigarettes out front with Bruno while on break. He was the manager. He borrowed my copy of Guilty of Everything by Herbert Huncke, you know those little Hanuman Press books, they used to sell them on the counter at St. Mark's Books. Anyway, he never returned it. I have no idea where Bruno and Brad would get lunch over there, I mean there's so many cheap dining options near St. Mark's... maybe San Loco? Who knows. If you show up to this event you ask him yourself. They worked next to Trash and Vaudeville but never purchased anything from that store (as far as I know, I think that studded dog collar Bruno wears was purchased from a boutique on Christopher street called London). Now Brad plays bass for U2. I should also mention that Mike Fellows is in Endless Boogie now. He's really old. Depressingly old. Like not ironically old. Just old. Cripplingly old. What else? Oh yeah Paul Major is gonna be there. OH WAIT!!!!!!!!!! I forgot Mark Henning is gonna DJ. Mark lives in Chicago. He has better records than you. Even though you know everything about "soul music" and have an active ebay account. Mark STILL has better records than you. OKAY. Now for the main event. Doug Pressman AKA The Record Grouch AKA Nightface AKA Carlos San Pedro AKA Mister Funnybidness is teaming up with Jeffrey Joe Jensen AKA Kenny "Bad Dawg" Monroe AKA Reg Lumley AKA Keith Poon AKA Triple J AKA The guy that used to sing for The Closet Case AKA me. Anyway we have a band called The Jewish. Not dropping names here but Jennifer from Royal Trux and Harmony really like us. (carbon dating myself a bit here) We’re into gay vanity pressings, Polish Metal and making prank phone calls to Amy Sedaris’ land line. Yes, one of THOSE kinda bands. There’s also artwork on the wall by this guy named Larry Bob Phillips. He used to live with me. He ashed on the floor and drank my bourbon. Extremely untidy. Sorry. Sorry for trying to make a night of live music that isn’t boring and stupid. Also forgot to mention Mike Bones is in Soldiers of Fortune. Great guitar player. True gentlemen. Oh yeah, Bobby's paintings and drawings are really good. He did the flyer. Also I should mention that as of writing this Doug and I have nothing planned. Like, musically we have nothing. Sorry for the "not funny" Kim Gordon "joke" i was just kinda free associating there people, I just had to write a description. She's great. Seriously. Met her in Vegas. Heart of gold. Anyway...speaking of "free" this event is free...and the beer is free... and i'm not getting paid at all. Like.... I'm actually losing money doing this. So why am i apologizing for a clumsy off-handed reference to Kim Gordon's bowels? No good reason. I mean she probably makes a lot of money and has built a lucrative career out of playing in unconventional bands. She has been lauded by respected writers and has won hundreds of thousands possibly millions of fans. She is a true indie rock success story. Doug and I never made a goddamned cent doing this shit. Okay... so I'm not officially taking back the apology...but like my ex-girlfriend Nel Carter used to say...."Gimme a Break". OK? Cuz if you don't make money...you're not a "professional" so, in that sense unprofessional copy is to be expected from a rookie like me....right? OK I'll shut up now. Just glad we could clear that up. Wait... why may I ask are you still reading this. Get a Life loser. It's like an art opening so it starts early like 8 or some shit. The Jewish will play first that way no one will see us except the janitors. The underpaid working class always tend to dislike us, I remember a ditch digger throwing a shovel at me during the climax of Fantasy Stalker at Bonnaroo... so this should work out good.
