Back in 2000 in the Melbourne suburb of Reservoir, a sinking bitumen area copped a concrete slab and the foundations of a minimal skatepark were made. As the years have gone on Rezy has transcended the word skatepark, and has in fact graduated to becoming a street spot. Its imperfections make it perfect and it has fast become a favourite for many local, interstate and international skaters. Thunderdome: Stop #3 of Australia's Nike SbA Pro/Am Tour. Features Australia's best skateboard warriors. The course for Thunderdome is unparalleled in Australian skate history. Sure, there may have been bigger purpose-built courses, but definitely not for a local comp. The level of the forty odd guys that were pre-qualified and invited to this comp was beyond what any of us have ever personally seen in an Aussie skate congregation. I guess the only problem with the collective bar raising that has gone as a result of this one, is topping it, but I’m sure, somehow the Aussie skate collective will do that next year. During the practice session for Shocklands there was a distinct moment when I realized that the obstacle assortment had been an absolute hit with the skaters. Sure I knew that it was good when I first lay eyes on Cuzza’s scribbles. The instantaneous ripping of the 2012 Pro/Am Tour constituents further confirmed the 'on-pointness' of Event manager Cuzza’s design. But, when the pizzas arrived and the skaters didn’t flinch I knew we were dealing with some A-grade terrain. I mean how often is the magnetism of an obstacle stronger than the aroma of free pizza? Never right? My thoughts exactly. Cuzza has always envisaged that there would be a legitimate street skating stop to the Pro/Am Tour and that stop is Shocklands. The obstacles this year were about as street as they come. Not a transition or drop in ramp in sight. continued here: http://skateboardingaustralia.org.au/Blog/2012-nike-sba-proam-stop-2-shocklands-wrap

This is a hype clip that features the highlights from last year’s Shocklands event. With Blake Harris leading the charge after Stop #1 of the Pro/Am Tour, all eyes are now on Shocklands to see who will challenge for the 2012 Australian Championship. Last year’s Shocklands winner and 2011 Oz Champ Tommy Fynn will no doubt be one to watch after blowing minds with the likes of kickflip backside noseblunt slides on the picnic table. “Last year was sick – everyone killed it! I can’t wait to see the course at this year’s Shocklands” says Tommy. Another solid contender from the 2011 event, Reece Warren comments: “The course is such a different set-up for a comp. It’s a cool vibe and the level of skateboarding at Shocklands is amazing. Keen as for this year.” Shocklands is the comp that shines the light on guys who can string it together in ‘real’ street environments. Ledges, manny pads, flat-rails, bump-to-rails, picnic tables, kickers . . . lines, flatground pop and a creative approach to a shed full of unique obstacles are the orders of the day at Shocklands. Stay tuned here at sba.org.au for course reveals and rider announcements. If the anticipation amongst the riders themselves is anything to go by, Shocklands 2012 is going to be one you don’t want to miss. I had a bit of a dilemma when it came to getting down to the comp on time for set up. I had to be there at eight and already it was ten minutes to. Tram? Bike? Cab? No: skateboard it was, despite the fun factor it would be the fastest. I broke out and bombed through the city. Normally I’d take Lil' Burke but today it had to be Collins. Bombed it, copped a green across Swanston, skipped across the tracks, left down Lizzy, under Flinders Station, across the Yarra and I seemed to be there. It was one and half songs on the pod, so I reckon I might have even gotten there a minute or two early. After I’d initially surveyed the area for some familiar SbA Wolf Pack faces it occurred to me that someone was already skating. It was a rather bedraggled, yet chipper Dix. There were a few surfers who also looked like they had pulled an all-nighter behind the fences too. They were seemingly ‘checking the swell’ (as Dix put it) at the top of the gap. Dix was obsessed by nosesliding down the hubba into the bank and after a solid splat and a couple of spit outs he was victoriously on his way… on his way back up to check how the swell would suit a 50/50 I guess. While Dix kept the security guard busy I set up the judging desk and snuck off a coffee. It was there that I realized Melbourne’s South Bank was indeed a different world to the Melbourne I knew. There was an abundance of silicon, make up and girls running around in penguin covered flannel jumpsuits. Given the stage of one of the most premium boardwalks in the country, only a slither of land was available for this set up. This leads to a uni-directional course, which was dead gnarly but definitely different. The gap was of the same proportions as the Docklands pebble gap, a measurement was made and a foot got added to both the height and length. There was a tight bank added that you could catch a bit of if you preferred (due to the whippiness this was a gnarlier alternative to going the full length). A couple of hubbas were added to the sides and there was a gap to giant electrical box kind of contraption in the middle that had a lil gap to it and an eyeball height drop off the end. There was a quarter pipe for added for extra run up when needed and a couple of small wallie-ish banks on the back of each hubba.
