HEREVES (HEIRESSES) 52 minutes. Enclosed for decades by the ineffectiveness of governments and supranational organizations, the conflict that keeps 200,000 Western Saharan refugees in a corner of the Algerian desert has created generations of people who have never had the opportunity of treading the land that their parents used to work and that they still love and claim for themselves. “Hereves” is a discovery return trip to the Saharawi refugee camps narrated from the eyes of two girls who have two sceneries in common: the arid sand of the Tinduf desert and the Mediterranean mildness of Majorca Island. With this trip, “Hereves” gathers up the testimony of different generations of women who live in and outside the camps and depicts a portrait of the present and the future that they will inherit in a country which has had no land for 35 years. A documentary by Ariadna Relea Photography and edition: Ariadna Relea Production: Mateu Moll Postproduction: Pau valiente, Mariana Valente Music and sound designer: Tolo Prats Spain, 2009

bare life, bear life video, 16min. A rumination in three parts, this video thinks about life in a permanent state of exception. Iraqi Palestinian refugees living in Damascus, Syria allowed Jennifer a peak into their experience of coping with trauma, uncertainty and vulnerability. With its titular nod to Giorgio Agamben's interpretation of the concept of bare life, or of personhood stripped of any inviolable protection, the video self-consciously points to the videomaker's relationship to its subjects and also to the precarious status of the dispossessed. For over two decades one of Africa's most violent rebel groups, The Lord's Resistance Army have been terrorising northern Uganda. Their initial aim was to defend the rights of the Acholi population but this quickly disappeared as they embarked on a brutal campaign of child abductions, murder, mutilations, rape and looting. Over 30,000 children have been abducted, forced to fight and kill each other and family members which has resulted in over 90% of the population fleeing to live in squalid displaced persons camps. The LRA finally left Uganda in 2006 heading into Sudan for peace talks leaving an uneasy peace in northern Uganda allowing people to start returning home to their villagers. The peace talks however failed and now the LRA are roaming the countryside of the DRC, South Sudan and Central African Republic, continuing their reign of terror on communities there.
