About home takes an inside look at a refugee camp 60 years after its creation. Suha and Ahmad are two young Palestinian refugees born in Beirut. They are the second-generation Palestinian refugees, and though they feel Palestinian, they only have ever seen their homeland through TV. The films explores the meaning of living in “stand by” mode, hoping for a resolution to the never-ending armed conflict unfolding in an atmosphere of hatred and violence. Small clockwork bombs inhabiting this unstable country. By Bruce Cumming After fleeing the Democratic Republic of the Congo during the war in 1996, Adam ended up at a refugee camp with 60,000 people. With almost half the refugees under the age of 18 and no schools, Adam realised that something needed to be done to help the youth. He helped set up the first school in the refugee camp holding classes on the ground. Nine years later he came to Australia. When he arrived in Shepparton, Adam became an integration aide at Notre Dame College. Wanting to resume his teaching career, he upgraded to Australian standards at La Trobe University and has recently become a fully qualified teacher, continuing a passion for education that runs through his family. A painting titled 'Africa is crying' hangs in his living room, a stark reminder of his life back in Africa. About the community contributor Bruce has been playing with audio and photos for years. A keen photographer, musician and general 'Yeah, I'll give it a go' kind of guy, he slipped into ABC Open without any hassles. Having met Adam at a leadership course and becoming good friends, he knew it was the story he wanted to tell for this project.
