A lonely man is woken in the middle of the night by an alien, who has some questions about humanity. But what is the alien's real intention? A short film centred around a conversation. CAST John Grinston, Malcolm Frawley, Darcy Keogh CREW Written, Directed, Produced and Edited by Damien Cassar (www.damiencassar.com.au) Cinematography: Adrian Reinhardt (http://www.adrianreinhardt.com) Sound Recordist: Patrick Mullins Sound Design & Original Score: Henrique Dib (http://www.henriquedib.com) Visual Effects & Titles: Tom Dicker (http://8itemsorless.com) LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN Sonata for Pianoforte & Cello Op.5 No. 2 in G Minor “Allegro molto piu tosto presto” Performed by Neal Peres Da Costa (Fortepiano) and Daniel Yeadon (Cello) Recording Engineer Patrick Mullins Shot in one day in December 2011, Sydney, Australia. The Visitor was devised in the months leading up to the birth of my first child. I wanted to make a film with a message of importance that I could pass on to my offspring. It ended up being this: that whenever we are at our loneliest, we must remember that we are connected to something much bigger than ourselves. Aside from this, I was interested in the challenge of a short film centred around a conversation. I was influenced by the work of four directors: the wonder of Steven Spielberg (especially Close Encounters of The Third Kind), David Lynch's dream like weirdness (Blue Velvet) and earnestness (The Straight Story), the abstract, poetic imagery of Terrence Malick (Days of Heaven, Tree of Life) and the psychological composition of Stanley Kubrick (2001, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut). Visually I wanted the film to feel epic, yet emotional and meditative. Given the story is about one man and his place in the universe, the film needed to have a gravity beyond the world of the character. For this reason we chose a 2:35 framing, with carefully composed shots and long takes. So much of the modern day world is a flurry of information and ideas. I wanted the film to be the visual opposite. Like the story and character, I wanted shots to take their time, to breathe, to work in formal compositions that reflected the man's state of mind. Yet to reflect the emotional and poetic nature of the story we went for a painterly palette: muted colours, use of light and shadow, an emphasis on the colour red. There is a deliberate dream like quality to the film - from its screenplay to the manner in which it is edited. The film originated from a place of ideas, thoughts and emotions. I wanted the film to move like this. I was less interested in explaining every minute detail and crafting a piece in which performance, visuals, tone, music and visual effects worked together to tell a visual poem that reflects the man's psychological journey from lonely to connected, yet also details the fragility of our existence, the difficulty of living; but also the grander narrative of our connectivity through our shared lived experience. Additionally, this is cinema, thus rather than aiming for a naturalistic performance I directed John Grinston to a cinematic performance. I wanted it to work on an emotional and dreamlike level. As a result the performance takes its time, wears the heart of humanity on its sleeve, and through its journey from lonely to connected conveys the message that we are all connected on a strange cosmic level. In essence, the journey taken by the man is somewhat of a therapy session for us all. www.memorybankfilms.com
