1. Digital Literacy Becoming Lead Story as Education Continues to Innovate

    Professor Renee Hobbs is one of the nation's leading authorities on media literacy education. She recently served as the Founding Director of the Harrington School of Communication and Media at the University of Rhode Island, where she helped develop a distinctive identity for the new school, which includes 5 undergraduate and 3 graduate programs. As director of the Media Education Lab (www.mediaeducationlab.com), Hobbs works to advance digital and media literacy through scholarship and community service. She developed Powerful Voices for Kids, a university-school partnership which offers a comprehensive program for K-12 schools. Professor Hobbs' research agenda examines the intersections of the fields of media studies and education. Author of five books and more than 150 scholarly and professional publications, she has also developed numerous award-winning multimedia resources for K-12 educators that help teachers integrate digital and media literacy into the curriculum. She has received more than $3.5 million in grants to support research, education and community outreach efforts in digital and media literacy education. With her colleagues at the University of Rhode Island, she helped create the new Graduate Certificate in Digital Literacy, a 12-credit graduate certificate program that cultivates regional and national leaders in the field. The annual Summer Institute in Digital Literacy is an intensive program of summer professional development for educators, librarians and media and information professionals. Hobbs is the Founding Co-Editor of the Journal for Media Literacy Education, an open-access online peer reviewed journal. Hobbs teaches fully-online graduate courses in media studies, education and library and information studies. Hobbs helped found the Partnership for Media Education, which evolved into the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE).
