For more information visit us at http://www.waterandenergyprogress.org/ John Pendleton discusses the conversion of his 1940s tractor from gas powered to electric powered - the benefits are numerous! It's quite, great for small scale, and the get-up-and-go power of the tractor is same as it was when it had a gas fueled engine.

On Friday 24 April 2015, The Energy Blog attended the sod-turning celebrations at soon-to-be turbine 5 at the Tsitsikamma Community Wind Farm in the Eastern Cape. The wind farm was first conceived by the late visionary and former political activist, Mcebisi "Mike" Msizi, long before there was any formal renewable energy programme in SA and after he had returned from exile where he had witnessed the growth of the wind energy industry in Europe. Speaker of the Eastern Cape, Noxolo Kiviet, the late Mcebisi Msizi's widow, Florence, and community leader Doreen Njenje of the amaFengu turned the sod. The amaFengu, were forcefully removed from the land on which the wind farm is being built in 1977. They are back on the land as part of a land claim process and are now 9% shareholders in the wind farm. In his speech, Thomas Garner, CEO of Cennergi (75% shareholders and jointly owned by Tata Power and Exxaro), apologised on behalf of his forefathers for the upheaval that apartheid had caused the amaFengu. The wind farm will consist of thirty one Vestas 3 MW turbines totalling 95.3 MW, further entrenching the Eastern Cape as SA's wind energy power-house. The event was a very joyous affair ... renewable energy is people's power!

Our company, Alaska Applied Sciences, Inc. owns a 13-turbine windplant in Palm Springs, CA. It has been stranded since June, 2012, with no connection to the SCE grid, because the power purchase agreement (PPA) has expired. We plan to convert this small windplant to produce high-purity hydrogen fuel, for buses and cars, by feeding its total annual energy production as DC electricity to electrolyzers, to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen gases. The carbon-emissions-free hydrogen gas would be compressed to ~ 3,500 psi (~ 230 bar) into tube trailers for delivery to local Southern California markets. The 1985-vintage wind turbines are equipped with three-phase squirrel cage induction motors, as generators. These motors will be operated in "Self-Excited Induction Generator" (SEIG) variable speed mode, with their "wild AC" output converted to "wild DC" for the electrolysis plant. This $ 4 million project needs $ 2.85 million in new funding, for which we have applied via the USDOE "ARPA-E" program, on 25 Feb 15.
