MacArthur Curator of mammals Bruce Patterson and research associate Paul Webala (Moi University, Kenya) are working together to get a better understanding of Kenya's bat diversity. As part of their study they are recording bat calls, gathering fecal samples and collecting tissues to do genetic studies. Back at the Field Museum Paul is helping out with the molecular component of the project as he learns new molecular techniques. Being able to learn these DNA analysis tools at the Field Museum complements Paul's background in wildlife biology and opens the opportunity for other Kenyan scientists to learn from him. Bruce and Paul's research project is only possible with the generous support that enabled them to initiate this collaboration. Special thanks to the Field Museum's Council on Africa, the IDP/FMNH African Training Fund, the Brown Mammal Research Fund, and Bud and Onnolee Trapp.

We created this video to share with you the experiences of youth who care for their family members. We want more youth caregivers in the United States and worldwide to be recognized and supported. This video was created through a participatory action research process and uses the real words and real experiences of youth caregivers, which were shared with us in focus groups. Three youth leaders worked with a doctoral student at Brandeis University, Sara Plachta Elliott, and staff of the Caregiving Youth Project in Palm Beach County, Florida, to conduct the research and create this video. Youth voices narrate the stories. This work reflects our passion for creating more awareness of what youth who provide care to family members with illness and disability experience. If you would like more information, please contact: The Caregiving Youth Project of Palm Beach County is the first US comprehensive program to address the challenges faced by children who take care of ill, injured, elderly or disabled family members.
