Alexander Fleming discovered the power of antibiotics in 1928. During his Nobel Prize speech, the man who identified penicillin warned that bacteria like staphylococcus aureus would eventually develop a resistance to drugs like penicillin. Today, hospitals battle resistant microorganisms like MRSA, a strain of staphylococcus aureus resistant to many antibiotics. Fleming’s warning has come full circle. Physicians and scientists are scrambling to preserve the effectiveness of current antibiotics. Overuse of antibiotics is the largest contributing factor to antibiotic resistance. To help improve care and slow the development of resistant bacteria, a physician at EVMS is developing a regional survey tracking antibiotic resistance patterns in the Hampton Roads region of southeastern Virginia. The survey will help physicians more quickly identify the antibiotics most likely to be effective against infections in the area, which will lower the overall number of antibiotics prescribed to a given patient. Antibiotic resistance is one of the most serious health threats today. A 2013 CDC report estimated that two million Americans get infections resistant to antibiotics — the treatment of choice for more than 80 years — and 23,000 of them die annually. A better understanding of this threat can help slow the spread of resistant microorganisms.
