    • Vacant Not Blighted: Revitalizing Detroit

      from MHPN Added 8,571 37 4

Detroit is facing enormous challenges with an abundance of vacant and abandoned buildings in the city. Demolition is a necessary part of moving the city forward, but Detroit can't just demo its way to revitalization. Here, individuals on the ground in Detroit show that through strategic preservation and rehabilitation of commercial and residential structures, you can change the dynamic one building at a time and demonstrate that just because it's vacant, doesn't mean it's blighted.

www.detroitjetaime.com. Detroit is the ultimate music town. The Detroit Party Marching Band got created two years ago by a wild bunch of young folks – John, Rachel and Molly. Most of the "DPMB" members came back recently to the D after growing up in the burbs or around the Midwest. They gather spontaneously on the streets of Detroit to make the city swing in Balkanic and New Orleans sounds, with the help of the crowd. We caught them on Noel night, December 3rd 2011 in Midtown Detroit. Credits: Image & Editing: Nora Mandray Steadycam: Logan Siegel Color Correction: Jason Kohl

            from Spacing Magazine Added 5,170 10 2

POWERS OF TOWERS profiles Graeme Stewart and Sabina Ali, two remarkable people on the forefront of a revolution that’s transforming Toronto’s now aging suburban high-rise clusters into livable communities that work — and attracting the attention of the international planning community in the process. For their work, Stewart and Ali have been awarded the 2014 Jane Jacobs Prize presented by Spacing magazine. Yet as apartment towers have aged, the demographics of their inhabitants have changed too. Both of our winners are applying Jane Jacobs’s methods to steer them into a second phase of useful life: Stewart by agitating for big-picture strategic thinking from the top down, and Ali by mobilizing the awe-inspiring energy of her community to create new ways of using the public space around them, literally from the ground up. We think Jane Jacobs would be pleased. Spacing Films presents POWERS OF TOWERS in association with Tangent Motion Pictures and Foxley Films. from Benjamin Golder Added 1,809 10 0

Created for the WPA 2.0 design competition by the Local Code Team, this video is an illustration of the site design algorithm used on a test batch of 150 neglected streets and alleyways in San Francisco. The algorithm analyzes shaded and unshaded regions of each street for 9 sampled sun angles, uses these regions to estimate the distribution of solar radiation on the street surface, analyzes the potential for sheltering neighboring buildings from the wind and places berms to do so, creates a figure from the local lot line geometry, determines the portion of that surface area that will be used as a water quality remediation area, places an modular unit to process stormwater and sewage, creates pipelines between water remediation areas, the sewer and the modular unit, and finally selects materials to use on different portions of the site based on environmental and demographic data. While only 150 streets are shown here, the algorithm was developed for use with a set of over 1600 "unaccepted" streets in San Francisco. The Local Code Team consists of: Professor Nicholas de Monchaux Natalia Etcheverri Benjamin Golder Sha Hwang Sara Jensen David Lung Shivang Patwa Thomas Pollman Matthew Smith Laurie Spitler

START COUNTING BLESSINGS, NOT CONDEMNED SIGNS HELP BEAUTIFY AND BRING HOPE TO THE BOSWELL AVENUE AREA One minute and $5 from you will bless an entire neighborhood! Visit https://notcondemned.nationbuilder.com/donate Don't forget to share: We've seen enough "condemned" signs in our neighborhood. There's been so many over the years it's as if some people believe they too are condemned, carrying a sign on the door of their hearts that shuts them out of their hopes and dreams. But that's not what we believe. We believe we are blessed. And that's the message we want to flood the area with. Your generous financial support goes to beautify a park area at times marked by unsanitary conditions and drug needles, and to acquire condemned land for church expansion that in turn will benefit the community. "Whoever believes in him is not condemned." John 3:18
