While SCUBA diving at Isla de la Plata off the coast of Ecuador, this whale shark appeared. I was swimming against strong current while watching a spotted eagle ray, when I noticed the whale shark swimming above me nearby. I headed over to get a closer look, and it rewarded me with a long and relaxed encounter. Sadly it has a large chunk missing from its tail, most likely due to entanglement in fishing line.

Whale sharks, Rhincodon typus, swimming off Isla Mujeres where they gather in the summer to feed on tuna eggs. The sharks shown in the video ranged to over thirty feet (nine meters) long. Each shark would weigh several tons out of the water. Whale sharks can live over seventy years. Whales sharks are related to nurse and carpet sharks, Orectolobiformes, species normally found resting on the sea floor. The order arose during the Jurassic period, making these true "Jurassic Sharks." Their greatest threats are from boat collisions and fishermen. Several of the whale sharks shown in this video have cuts on their fins from boat propellers. Whale Shark Majesty is best viewed on a system offering a strong base.

Despite their giant size of up to 50 ft they are gentle plankton eaters that have been known to cause excitement in newbie photographers. This was a juvenile at around 22 ft.
