      • Range of Motion...

        from 3dm Productions Added 25 3 0

After a somewhat unfortunate experience, I decided to post this skin weights example, demonstrating what I hope is a rather effective example of good deformation and range of movement, even though I kept the skeletal structure simple, opting to rely on calculated joint placement and weighting over a barrage of extra joints. The model is a foundling, so the topology is iffy in some key areas, like the neck and clavicles. I did what I could, but those areas still bother me. It took about 60 minutes to weight the upper body, arms, and wrists... Some prefer to mimic the human skeleton, but I try to mimic the perceived and logical points of rotation, which tends to offer the best control and performance, with the appropriate weighting applied. While I prefer this method, I do what needs doing... I like to get the core weighted, before deciding where to add extra influences to enhance deformation further. After all, there are many paths to a common goal.
