The following documentary tries to uncover what is the carnival in Rio and how does this view we have of of Carnival help create the vision we have of the 'carioca' (which means people from Rio de Janeiro). I was the sole director, editor, producer, researcher. I also interviewed and camera set most the interviews. Carolina Carvalho helped with the planning and production process, with the camera and interviews. The interviewed were: Jorge Luiz - Sociology Professor and Director of a Samba School as well as two street carnival parades. Carolina Barcelos - Theatre and History teacher, Post-graduate in Language Culture and contemporaneity and an enthusiastic participant of carnival Ary Cohen - Musician, Director of ARYthmetics of Samba - a Samba group he organizes, director of the musicians of one of the biggest street parades and of a School of Samba for Giovanna Dealtry - Teacher of Portuguese at PUC-Rio, who did her masters thesis on Samba and Carnival GLOSSARY Since there are many specific terms from Brazilian portuguese the following glossary might help in understanding the movie: Carioca - Those who are from or live in Rio de Janeiro Surdo - a musical instrument of Samba Band - a brazilian tv channel Bloco/Street carnival parade - a small 'parade' (depending on the size of the bloco that happens on the street, lead by a car with the samba singers on it, it is very free and disorganized. Emilia and Monica - traditional fantasies from the brazilian culture ( to do with comic books and TV series) School of Samba - an old bloco that decided to run for the annual competition of Samba Schools (the one which is televised), which includes these huge parades with very specific, big and elaborate fantasies for people to wear, lead by a samba music. Mangueira - a big and famous School of Samba Candomblé and Umbanda - African Religion incorporated within the Brazilian culture Diretas Ja - A movement during the Brazilian Dictatorship when people urged on the streets, manifesting the wish for an election where they could vote for their representative. "Bola Preta", "Simpatia quase amor", Suvaco de Cristo"... - Blocos or street carnival parades Lakes' Region of Rio - The region to where you travel and find the best beaches Lapa - a neighborhood in Rio where there are many parties and bars with and and etc. - much like a constant carnival PS: when the 'black character' of 'black presence' is mentioned it is referring to something we call "negritude" which can be the proudness of having the darker skin color, or the importance of black people to our culture - and it is used in the movie in a synthesis of both it's meaning.
