Panel discussion hosted by the Common Sense Society in Washington, DC (October 18, 2012). Has the promotion of LGBT rights in American foreign policy affected the promotion of religious freedom? Are the two inevitably in conflict, or merely a matter of learning to walk and chew gum at the same time? In this discussion, a panel of noted experts with differing points of view will examine these claims. Specifically, we will consider (1) whether the active promotion of LGBT rights around the world has diminished the United States' dedication to promoting religious freedom abroad, (2) to what extent, if any, these two concepts are mutually exclusive, (3) what political implications has this had for the United States—both domestically and internationally, and (4) what role should and does American public opinion play in shaping international diplomacy on issues of religious freedom and LGBT rights. Panelists: -Thomas Farr, Director, Religious Freedom Project at Georgetown University -Austin Ruse, President, Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute (C-FAM) -James Kirchick, Fellow, Foundation for Defense of Democracies -Tad Stahnke, Director of Policy and Programs, Human Rights First -Robert Reilly (chair), Former Director of Voice of America
