    • Night Skies over Portal, AZ

This was an impromptu series of lapses I shot while in Portal, AZ on the nights of the 16th and 17th of April, 2015. Unfortunately because I was not expecting to do any timeless I did not perfectly set things up and the focus on both series could use some work, but they are not bad for no planning. Both shots highlight the rising Milky Way, shooting stars from the Lyrid showers and a satellite flare. Finally, if you look closely you will notice the slight green hint of sky glow in the shots. Sky glow is caused by high energy protons slamming into the upper atmosphere, which partially ionizes the atmospheric oxygen, causing a characteristic photon emission as a green color. Also, you will notice waves, propagating through the frames which are the sky glow from ionized oxygen and nitrogen (a slightly purple color) as well as atmospheric dust, high above Arizona. I hope you enjoy. The music "To Go Beyond" is by Enya.

Shooting in Death Valley between February 20 and 22, 2015. Locations included Dante's View, Devil's Golfcourse, and the Racetrack. MANY learning experiences on this trip - and lots of fails. This video is the raw footage, post processed, but not edited. So you'll see my fails here! Fun! Equipment included: Nikon D610, D750, Rokinon 12mm, 14mm, Nikon 20mm, Tokina 16-28mm, Emotimo TB3, Dynamic Perception Stage Zero, QDSLR dashoard, LR TImelapse, After Effects and Sony Vegas. Lots of problems with dead batteries (in my cameras, powering my TB3, running QDSLR, and running my iPad). Perhaps the temperature? Lots of user error problems - ending sequences too soon, or starting too late, missing light (too early or too late). Too fast with the slider - I have to learn to either shoot more frames in a given move (slowing the move) or move over a shorter area (shortening the move). Either way, the rail shouldn't be a roller coaster. And the pan shouldn't give you whiplash. Speaking of the TB3... in the pitch black desert, with the unit a foot off the desert floor, the red LED inside the box is bright enough to cast a red "headlight" in front... so that sequence was ruined. Last trip to Joshua Tree I discovered that my Anker battery was lighting my scene, this time it was the TB3... next time who knows. Also had some software issues with the QDSLR running on the iPad and Nexus 7- new version of the software was released the day before we left, so i got to test it in the field. Some great new features, but also some new things to be aware of - namely, you can't shoot more than 1 frame every 6 seconds when using the QDSLR to trigger the shutter. According to the developer, it seems that 4-5 seconds between exposures is necessary. So that moves my sunset shots from 1 frame every 5 seconds to 1 frame every 10 seconds. It'll be interesting to see how that shakes out... Anyhow, always learning, always trying. That's why this is a hobby... and expensive and sometimes frustrating hobby!

Back to Jumbo Rocks and a visit to White Tank for some more sequences. This compilation is raw - assembled so I could see what I got, and edited to test some flow. If you are watching this, yay, thank you, but it's not "finished". Not sure if any of it will make it past this clips or not. As always, it was a learning experience with highs and lows, frustrations and eureka moments. Equipment and Software used: Nikon D750, Nikon D610, Rokinon 12mm, 14mm, Nikon 20mm, Tokina 16-28mm, Rokinon 35mm, Sigma 50mm, Emotimo TB3 Black, Dynamic Perception Stage zero, QDSLR Dashboard, LR Timelaps, Lightroom, After Effects, Sony Video Vegas.
