from Moody College of Communication / Added

Kathleen Hall Jamieson, a political communication scholar who frequently appears on national television, presented "Fact, Fallacy and Fantasy in Political Advertising" at The University of Texas at Austin College of Communication on April 15. Jamieson – Elizabeth Ware Packard Professor of Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication and Walter and Leonore Annenberg Director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania – will discuss the implications of misleading 2012 presidential campaign ads. "Some patterns of deception in the 2012 campaign made it more difficult for the eventual winner to govern," Jamieson said. "Neither candidate revealed the trade offs required to address the debt crisis; both trafficked in fear about the global economy; and the notion that Obama had ‘gutted welfare reform’ ultimately denied governors flexibility they had sought." Jamieson helped create FactCheck.org and FlackCheck.org, nonpartisan projects of the Annenberg Public Policy Center that monitor deception and confusion in U.S. politics. Jamieson said she developed the visual structure for broadcasters to use in policing false ads during her time as chair of the College's Department of Communication Studies (1986-1989), with help from reporters at the Belo Corporation's WFAA-TV and Dallas Morning News.
