A large part of Roots to Harvest is working with high school classes to create authentic experiential opportunities. One such program exists at Superior CVI in Thunder Bay, where we have created a functional Aquaponics system! Aquaponics is the combination of hydroponics (plants) and aquaculture (fish) to create a closed system that benefits both parties. The ammonia (fish poop) created by the fish is converted into Nitrates and Nitrites by bacteria that are taken up by the plants. Its an amazing system! A system that students monitor, measure, modify, create experiments, and are totally responsible for its well being. For more information visit www.rootstoharvest.org

Roots to Harvest is about good food. We are an organization located in Thunder Bay, Ontario who employs a number high school students to develop and maintain urban gardens. These students are exposed to the wide world of gardening, learning who to plan, design, implement and maintain an urban garden. Each student is employed full time in the summer, and part time during the school semester. During the summer the group lends a hand at numerous local farms, learning techniques, and working up a sweat! It is Roots to Harvest goal to make these students employable, hard working, happy and knowledgeable about the importance of good local food. For more information on Roots to Harvest, feel free to visit our webpage: www.rootstoharvest.org On January 18, 2014 the group met at the new office location to begin the planning and preparation for the coming spring. That included the unusually fun task of seed saving! The kids spent the entire day breaking, crushing, carving, picking, sifting and counting a large variety of seeds. Jo Anne Henderson, a local seed saver, was there to guide and educate us on the importance of seed saving. It was a wonderful experience, and the group learned just how important seed saving is to promote a healthy and productive garden. Music Credits- "Happiness" - Krafty Kuts Created by Kris Dontas
