http://rootsandshoots.org/campaigns/n... The National Youth Leadership Council of Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots is announcing its cinematographic call to action to Get Young People in Nature to Protect Wild Things in Wild Places! We are inviting creative, environmental young minds to submit self-made videos highlighting a project idea to make a difference for a National Park in their area. As a part of this initiative, friends of Roots & Shoots are invited to create video pitches which will include a description of an idea for a project that their group would like to complete to help one of their local national parks. Participants will be given the opportunity to share their videos with a wide audience and will be considered for a $1,000 grant to fund their very own National Parks conservation project.

‘The Gardeners Go To War tells the story of the black gardeners who fought for King and Country in the First World War and are the inspiration for ‘The Gardeners Have All Gone’, Pennard Plants’ 2014 RHS Chelsea Flower Show exhibit, which is being presented together with London education and environment charity Roots and Shoots. Roots and Shoots students made this newsreel to show in the potting shed on the Chelsea garden. It imagines how the gardeners at the ‘Big House’ might have swapped their spades and rakes for rifles and bayonets, donned the khaki uniform, learned to march and fight and then sailed for France. Many of this year’s students have an Afro Caribbean heritage and took the parts of the gardeners-turned-soldiers, while the household staff left behind were played by Roots and Shoots’ young female trainees. The Gardeners Have All Gone’ by Pennard Plants, in association with Roots and Shoots, will be in the Grand Pavilion on stand GPD14 at 2014 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. pennardplants.com rootsandshoots.org.uk Thanks to Tanner Trust, Headley Foundation, Cockayne - Grants for the Arts, London Gardens Network, Sarah Wilson, Angels the Costumiers, Alistair Cooke

Year 5 are involved in a project entitled, ‘Roots and Shoots’. We will be working alongside the NHS and Alnwick Gardens. The workshop with the NHS involved us sampling fruit and vegetables and understanding the different food groups and their nutritional value. The gardeners from the Alnwick Gardens worked with us. Fish, blood and bone fertiliser along with rock dust were added to the garden bed. It was dug in and then raked. Drills were formed and a selection of radish, parsnip, carrot and beetroot seeds were planted. Potatoes were also added...(all root crops) Inside the poly tunnel was another world. Trays were prepared with compost and pak choi seeds were added. We learnt how to water properly and with the warmth of the surroundings the seeds will germinate quickly. Potatoes were also planted in sacks. Being inside would mean that we could harvest them earlier than outside. A visit to the bee hives allowed us to appreciate the importance of having insects in our gardens. The afternoon was complete after a walk around the gardens and an adventure across the swing bridges at the Tree House. Next, the gardeners will visit us at school and we will plant out our own garden.
