        • UBUNTU

          from ABOVE Added 6,698 56 5

PLEASE READ >> While in Cape Town, South Africa last year I initiated an art project in the township of Lavender Hill, involving the community and especially the children of the area in the process. The word UBUNTU is a southern African ethic or humanist philosophy focusing on people's allegiances and relations with each other. Having painted in this impoverished township weeks prior, I quickly noticed how interested the children were with making art. Their township had an overwhelming number is discarded tires littered all over their property. A few weeks later, I conceptualized a fun project involving the communities children and re-appropriating the hundreds of tires, to make a colorful totem pole. Each child chose a color to paint their tire. Once dried we joined all the tires together, and stacked the colorful spectrum into one unified totem pole. South Africa is an extremely diverse country and each color of the tires represented different races. As is in life, when we all work together and help each other out we are able to grow and become larger than life! The enthusiasm and smiles of the children touched me deeply! I was honored to introduce them to painting, as many of them have never held a brush or painted before. from FAITH47 Added 5,968 37 9

South Africans have very strong and sometimes disturbing headlines to deal with. the cape of good hope piece was a 3 day climb into our process of dealing with these headlines and intercepting them... holding them in time for all to see.... For a moment the wall stands in the grimy near district of gympie street and calls you to maintain your focus on messages that otherwise fly past in indirect moments... its horrorific calmness captures the mood of the area and of the thought behind the work.... its dark and its a product of 29 years of growing up in this little sea side town of beauty and pain... Filmed in 2009. Directed by Rowan Pybus, Music by Inge Beckmann. special thanks to red bull, ernst alex, misha teasedale, wayne de lange, the people of cyprus st

                      from FAITH47 Added 315 6 1

#ANOTHERLIGHTUP leverages street art with the capacity of crowd-funded community engagement. The project, which aims to fund the installation of a street light system into one of Cape Town's more dangerous neighbourhoods, empowers individuals with the potential to be active agents in change. Design Indaba Trust, Faith47 and Thingking have teamed up to create a mural that seeks to create a community level change through the duality of art-based social impact. The multi-story artwork has a visual feedback loop for those who view it; the wall lights up at night each time enough money is raised for one new light to be installed on a pathway in the informal settlement of Monwabisi Park, Khayelitsha, through the organisation VPUU (Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading). The intricate lighting pattern is an artistic endeavour that also serves as a reminder that there are communities in the city that lack the luxury of light, which is a major public safety concern. Tweet #ANOTHERLIGHTUP to help promote the project and turn the lights on momentarily. When enough funds are raised for another light in Monwabisi the mural lights up for the evening. - See more at: anotherlightup.com a video made by Rowan Pybus Music by Miriam Makeba produced by Makhulu
