On January 20, 2009, Barack Obama was inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States. The former Illinois Senator overcame great odds to become our first African-American President. In the last four years President Obama has ended two wars in the Middle East, restored tarnished and fractured diplomatic relationships with world leaders, guided the country out of a severe financial crisis, and implemented the first national health insurance program allowing all US citizens access to medical care. The 2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate has written two best-selling books, declared his public support for same-sex partnerships, and signed the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act of 2010 that allows openly gay people to serve in the United States Armed Forces. In his four years in office, the President has consistently fought for the well-being of all Americans. Last week at Symphony Space, the jazz community came out in support of "Jazz for Obama 2012,” a fundraiser to help the President's re-election campaign. It was spearheaded by pianist and composer Aaron Goldberg, who did an outstanding job in bringing together both luminaries and up-and-coming jazz artists on one stage in support of President Barack Obama. Goldberg also put together the last "Jazz for Obama" concert back in 2008 at the 92Y in Harlem. This year’s performers and speakers included Ashley Kahn, Andy Borowitz, Ron Carter, Jimmy Heath, Kenny Barron, Greg Hutchinson, Jim Hall, Ravi Coltrane, Geri Allen, Christian McBride, Ralph Peterson, McCoy Tyner, Joe Lovano, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Gretchen Parlato, Becca Stevens, Brad Mehldau, Arturo O’Farrell, Claudia Acuna, Alex Hernandez, Zach O’Farrill, Adam O’Farrill, Craig Haynes, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts, Henry Grimes, and NEA Jazz Master Roy Haynes. In this special edition of The Pace Report, many of the participants in Jazz for Obama 2012 express their opinions and share their thoughts on President Barack Obama, as well as talk about the music played during the evening. Roy Haynes is a jazz legend of the first order. In a career spanning 7 decades, Roy has helped to write the story of modern jazz, drumming with Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and just about everyone else. Chick's groundbreaking 1968 album Now He Sings, Now He Sobs was his first encounter with Roy, and they've been working steadily ever since, right through the 2010 tour of the Freedom Band.
