http://www.gty.org/resources/sermons/44-17 Historians tell us that just looking early on the life of the church in the first decade of the church’s life, there are at least five outbreaks of persecution, just in one decade. It all starts in the Jerusalem church, and you can open your Bible to Acts 4 because that’s where it begins. Here in Acts 4 is the first persecution of the church. The church, at best, is weeks, weeks old, brand new believers....

BFTBC – Acts 3:20-4:3 – Midweek Service – Pastor D. A. Waite On Thursday, July 10, 2014, Pastor D. A. Waite discussed Acts 3:20-4:3 at the midweek service of the Bible For Today Baptist Church of Collingswood, New Jersey. Pastor D. A. Waite Bible For Today Baptist Church 900 Park Avenue Collingswood, NJ 08108 www.BibleForToday.org 856-854-4747 Acts 3:20 - 4:4 20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: 21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began. 22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. 23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people. 24 Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days. 25 Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. 26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities. And as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them, 2 Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3 And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day: for it was now eventide. The years between Malachi and the Gospels were the “silent years”. They were all but silent. Control of the land of Israel was passed from Medo-Persia to Greece under Alexander the Great and then to Rome. Highways and Byways had been constructed and trade along with travel became popular. Politically, there was a resistance against the pagan influence and the Pharisees were “birthed” strictly interpreting the OT and subscribing to oral tradition. The Sadducees also birthed during this time and adhered to the Torah of Scripture only and not the entire OT. These were the religious leaders of the day, but were in constant conflict. Rome decided to appoint a king. Herod the Great became “king of the Jews” in 37 BC. This is the world Jesus was entering.
