1. Homunculus

Humble is proud to present, Homunculus, the first of an annual series of experimental films by our in-house directing collaborative, Hydra. Conceived of and directed by Sam Stephens, Homunculus is a dark and twisted fable of spontaneous generation and untrammeled id. Taking its title from the Latin word for "Little Human", the piece is an associative mashup between the two concepts behind the word: The first being middle-age alchemical beliefs that "little men" could be spontaneous generated from dead or decaying matter. The second being Carl Jung's usage as a personification of pure id. These ideas, combined with our love of Dutch still life's "beautiful decay," sowed the seeds for this unique little monster of a film. The Hydra team assembled an entire still-life spread; fruits, cheeses, flowers, fish, and an uncooked pheasant. They then sealed it off in a 6x6 foot plexiglass box. 3 DSLrs, set at varying angles, were set to shoot a frame every 5 minutes for 11 days. Meanwhile, co-director Chris Mauch began to design a series of "little men," some cute and cuddly, some not so much. In Maya, Chris and our team of volunteer animators and modelers began to build and rig the creatures. Over the course of 4 months, in between jobs and on weekends, Sam, Chris, and the team pieced together the sometimes funny, sometimes disturbing madcap narrative --a mixture of Tex Avery cartoons and H.R. Giger inspired body horror. True to its subject, and to the surprise of its producers, what was to be a small 30 second blip organically grew into an entire HD short film. With the completion of the 12-tone score by Koven Smith and the surround sound mix by Joe Muiccio, we're pleased to premiere our furry little labor of love. Please enjoy...hopefully on an empty-ish stomach.

Humble directing collaborative Hydra helms the newest video for Latin America's biggest rock band. A super-saturated, unabashedly theatrical production, Hydra pairs the stadium ready sweep of "Lluvia al Corazon" with a full dance company, a couple truckloads of props, and a stage design which we were told was "borderline physically impossible." The 40 foot, double-turntable stage, designed by humble creative director Sam Stephens, served as both a super-group worthy performance platform and as a dynamic, constantly shifting backdrop for the series of lyric-inspired vignettes. On the smaller spectrum, the rear projections continued Hydra's obsession with the handmade. A forest made from twigs and moss, office-cooler hurricanes of swirling dry ice, and an "infinity box" of Edison bulbs, plywood, and mylar were all made in our buddy's West Hollywood garage. Working with the coolest, most down-to-earth group of rock superstars we've ever met, and combined with our rock solid, inspiring crew, the video turned out to be something we feel is pretty special.

For rural farmers, the influence of village leaders must never be underestimated. In Cambodia, when only 29% of the population has a latrine, mass change is hard to imagine when too many village chiefs, schools, and health centers don't have latrines themselves. Telling the story of village chief, Sok Chamreoun, we show an inspiring story of a man who believed his village would be significantly healthier if everyone had a latrine, so much so that he worked with other village leaders and families to make buying toilets a community priority. Three months after he began his movement, 100% of the families in his village had their own latrine. Special thanks to New York based director from Humble, Sam Stephens, as well as Miguel Drake-McLaughlin, Todd Brown, and 391 Productions.

32 teams, 32 stories. Humble goes country hopping for the World Cup. After the success of the ESPYS redesign (now on year 3 and going strong), Humble was tasked with designing a series of 60 second "team trailers" for ESPN's coverage of the 2010 World Cup. Built around an green screen performance by Djimon Honsou, creative director Sam Stephens envisioned an epic style based on panoramic photography manipulated into planetary proportions. Using a "Little Planet" photo-projection technique, each country took its place in a solar system of champion hopefuls. Photographers from 13 countries were sent to each of the team's capital cities; from Paris to Pyongyang, to capture a panoramic view of the country's most famous landmarks. Back at Humble, we took these shots (up to 60 exposures for a single location) and stitched them together to create each team's little planet. An extensive motion graphic toolkit was created for ESPN, allowing them to create multiple versions for each team's narrative. By the end of the process, over 240 separate versions of the 32 animations was produced and shown over broadcast and web channels. Humble was happy and honored to lend their time and skills to the World Cup. Now if you'll excuse us, there's a game coming on....
