I had the honor of meeting Samuel Yirga through Vahe Tilbian. He is humble in his manner and is not confrontational but his modest demeanor belies his audacious and virtuous playing style. When he sits to the piano, Sammy's command of harmony and rhythm, his ability to adapt and control all become evident through an amazing display of musical giftedness. Samuel Yirga majored in Piano and Music Theory at the Yared School of Music (a university level music school based in Addis Ababa) that was in-part founded by Nerses Nalbandian during his years as Music Director of Ethiopia's National Theater. The school is the only higher-level music school in Ethiopia and is a major source of many of Ethiopia's musical talent. In this clip, I had a chance to record a portion of Sammy Yirga's live performance with Alemeyahu Eshete at Jazzamba Lounge in Piassa district of Addis Ababa. You can find Samuel Yirga's new solo album GUZO available from Real World Records at the link here: www.realworldrecords.com/artists/samuelyirga

A short piece on the amazing Samuel Yirga, who's first album 'Guzo' is about to be released on Real World Records http://realworldrecords.com/catalogue/guzo/ The interviews were shot back in 2011 during the latter stages of the recording and mixing sessions for the album at Real World Studios. We also took some time to shoot Sammy playing an improvised piano piece live in The Wood Room https://vimeo.com/20928047 Some of the resulting 'Ambassel in Box Revisited (Live)' also appears here. Thanks to Chris Walsh for the excerpt of Sammy in Dub Colossus mode from his 'Audience of One' programme https://vimeo.com/11804510
