Rueben Singleterry: Made of Steel, follows 15-year-old San Antonio native, Rueben Singleterry. In September 2014, Rueben was diagnosed with encephalitis, a rare virus which causes inflammation in the brain. The resulting seizures he endured nearly took his life. Rueben has spent the last year beating the odds to an almost full recovery. Part of Rueben's incentive to overcome his adversity was so he could pursue his passion for basketball. In this 12 minute film Rueben is given a platform with which to share his story, from his near death experience to joining his high school basketball team. He hopes to inspire others to never give up, no matter how difficult the circumstances. Learn more at http://www.WalleyFilms.com/Rueben-Singleterry

      • La Espada Park

        from Phil Murray Added

I was exploring some of the roads along the San Antonio River south going from mission to mission and came upon La Espada Park which I'd never visited before. It's a very beautiful place and teh city has done a nice job of creating a nice trail system which was being used by dozens and dozens of people including tons of families. It was here that I discovered the original dam built by Native Americans and Spanish priests back in the early 1700's to send water into the irrigation system that watered their crops. Built sometime between 1731 and 1745, what's left of the dam is only a small portion, but it's still working well to hold back the channel. It's pretty spot, especially as there was a good flow. I didn't intend to spend a lot of time there, but I spotted the two birds shown (not the white egret) who allowed me to get surprisingly close. I'm not sure what kinds of birds they are, but my first thought was that they were a blue heron and an anhinga. Not being a birder myself, I'd love for someone to identify them for me.
